ok, first up, excuse my dodgy nickname. i had a decent nick WAY back in the bluelight.nu days but somewhere along the way the password got reset and sadly the account was registered with one of the free ????.bluelight.nu email address which is also long gone.

I used to smoke; been quitting for about 5 years now, mostly successfully. I've hit another point where the cravings overpower me when I'm drunk, and I'm looking to minimize the harm from smoking.

I love the feeling of nicotine when I'm drunk, but would like to avoid the cancerous implications of cigarettes as much as possible. does anyone have any experience using nicotine patches, not as a way to quit smoking (Im strong enough sober to resist), but as a way to get the nicotine high while drunk? do they give the same "hit" that you get smoking a cigarette? have any studies found nicotine to be a carcinogen by itself, when not consumed via smoking?

my apologies for this not being about plugging MD, taking meth intra-ocularly or snorting retarded amounts of research chemicals, but i figured if anyone had tried using nicotine patches recreationally, they'd be on bluelight

It's a strange idea. Smokers get a feeling of relief when they put on a patch because it alleviates nicotine craving, for a non-smoker to do so, firstly it'll probably make you dizzy and secondly, for a lot of smokers, a lot of the habit is related to the physical act of dragging on a cancerstick so a patch might not address that.

You should consider electronic cigarettes, of all the substitutes I think that would be the most appropriate one for your situation. As long as you can deal with smoking a metal stick in public; it delivers nicotine like a normal cigarette but without the harmful chemicals and carcinogens caused by igniting a real cigarette.

I have a family member who has pretty much transferred his addiction from smoking to patches and lozenges, he insists that he loves nicotine and is happy doing it like that. Not really recreational though. I think it's stupid myself, because you're always going to go back eventually (he still smokes the odd bong with spin in it)

Hoptis - I do believe e-cig's are illegal now in Australia, or a banned import or something? I read it on a forum that shall not be named here for various reasons - apparently because they haven't been 'proved' to be any healthier and I guess they make therapeutic despite not being cleared by the TGA.

(edit)

A quick google reveals this

"This looks like another insidious, manipulative attempt to hook people on smoking," Health Minister Nicola Roxon told news.com.au.

"I'd be very concerned about any attempts to promote smoking, especially to young people."

According to a spokesperson for the Federal Department of Health and Ageing, every form of nicotine except for replacement therapies and cigarettes are classified as a form of poison.

Last October, the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee (NDPSC) decided that this classification should remain for e-cigarettes, which effectively makes it illegal to sell nicotine e-cigarettes in all states and territories.

"The e-cigarette has not been evaluated for safety or efficacy," said a spokesperson for the Federal Department of Health and Ageing.

"Nicotine has well recognised physiological and pathological effects and, as with conventional cigarettes, the e-cigarette would be expected to lead to, and sustain, nicotine addiction."

And judging from this pic alone I have my doubts as to whether they are as safe as they're made out to be, that's an awful lot of vapour he's blowing out

As (unfortunately) a relatively seasoned/heavy smoker I'd say you'd be wasting your time, I couldn't imagine a patch/lozenge etc 'satisfying' a drunken craving, though they may reduce them, just as they do when one is sober. But I'd be interested to hear if you try it.

Lots of people like the odd smoke when they have had a few drinks. People might shoot me down for this, but I wouldn't think a couple of smokes on the occassional big night would do you that much harm, unless of course you drink often and smoke alot when you are drunk.

I can't recommend champix enough tbh, as much as plugging a pfizer product irks me some, the shit works. I'm 7 weks clean now - had a bong with a touch of spin on xmas day, broke down and had 1.5 cigs on new years day during a coke comedown, but had stopped taking the champix a week before, got back on it for a another week or so then stopped, been fine but yesterday had a few bongs with spin in it simply because that's all that was there otherwise would have happily smoked green, btu haven' had ny cravings after doing that. I really can't recommend it enough, if you can handle the (minor for me) side effects, like disturbed sleep and whacky dreams.

Be very careful with that. Being drunk and wearing the patch may not just be enough. Smoking with the patch on may cause you to throw your guts up. I know if I was drunk I'd probably end up doing it.

e-cigs and juice are only illegal to sell in australia, you can import them and the juice with no problems, customs may open the package but they don't seize anything

actually have one on order, just a cheapy to try it out then I'm getting a Joye510

here's a good thread on Whirlpool about them: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1299681

or you could try nicorette microtabs, they work within a few minutes as they're absorbed sublingually

Or you could give hypnotism a go and do away with all the cravings sober and drunk. My better half while not a heavy smoker sober used to chain smoke after being on the booze and even worse when on other substances. Had around three sessions of hypno at around 50 buck a pop and hasnt smoked for 8 months (drunk or sober).
I know it may not be for everyone and i was very sceptical myself at the time but it seems to have worked a treat.

Anyway...my 2 cents worth.

Good luck with your cravings iwantmypassword :)

i had the same problem when i was quitting, and i found that lower dose chewy worked a treat. Just don't have too many during the night cause it will make you pretty nauses
