I have been diagnosed with ADHD, and I've been looking at alternatives to the usual stimulants. I have not used cigarettes in about 4 years, before which I smoked regularly for 2 years.

With a 7mg patch: "I applied it to my waist. Within an hour and a half I started experiencing nausea muscle cramping around the patch as well as in my extremities. There was some sedation, mild euphoria and a couple rushes, but nothing tremendously remarkable. Music sounded kind of dull. The patch was removed at t+2:30 due to extremely painful cramping.""

With a 7mg patch cut in half (3.5mg): "I applied it again to my waist. There was some minor stimulation in the following few hours, and again a lot of cramping throughout the body, especially in my extremities. At one point my feet experienced paresthesia. It's hard to tell if I was actually alert or just on edge because of all the cramps. The patch was removed at t+4:30 due to painful cramping."

In summary: Nicotine through the skin is not terribly interesting or even psychoactive.

Are you sure this isn't a matter of dosage? My mother (a non-smoker) chewed a piece of 2 mg nicotine gum and had a terrible reaction. Though I suppose the pharmacokinetics are somewhat different transdermally even if the AUC is probably the same.

Obviously something gets to the brain if smokers can use patches to detox..

The patches are designed to deliver steady state levels of nicotine over 24 hours, with peak levels reached in about 2 hours. So, my doses in either instance were very small, probably around what I would have gotten from a cigarette (though I never recall feeling like this from a cigarette).

How did you reseal the patch after cutting, it sounds like that could potentially throw more nicotine into your system than normal.... incidently, the lab next door has some pure nicotine, if you want Ill send some your way and you can snort it!! ;)

I have used patches in the past in my (failed) attempts to quit.

They do numb the patch area and cause mild discomfort. But the real kicker is I've never had more intense, colored, visual dreams on anything but nicotine patches.

I didn't reseal it, the adhesive part was very goo-ey (no liquid inside) and had the tendency to tear around the edges when I removed it from the package, so I didn't worry all that much when I cut it. It was definitely down in potency compared to the full patch.

I'll try the gum if I bother trying it again... I'll probably just go to a doctor for some methylphenidate before that, though.
