Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

^ nice input I appreciate it. Yeah, the E-cig is too expensive and I couldn't get a good enough hit off the sample I tried. I was craving a cig at the time I tried it, and it didn't really curb the craving. I guess it didn't have the rat poison that I inhale with my marlboros. Nothin beats a marlboro light man..

Ive tried the gum, but it didnt help at all. I went about a week then started smoking again. I dunno If I will ever be able to quit. I guess I will just Exclude 7 years from my life.

Need some help with quitting smoking

I've finally decided to try to quit again. I quit a year ago and stayed quit for nearly four months... Had my 21st birthday, got wicked drunk and bummed cigs from everybody, woke up the next morning hung over and dying for a cig... Knew exactly where the extras were in the house (mom smokes).

So, here's the thing: I know how to slowly quit. But the problem is the first few weeks I am an absolute bitch. Is there anything I can do to stop being so cranky? I'm contemplating taking a week off work (I deal with the public) and just locking myself in my room, lol. I've heard cinnamon helps with the withdrawal--Is this true?

Any help is appreciated. :)

There's other drugs you can use to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms, but most drugs themselves can be addictive just like smoking tobacco.

It's best just to tough out the "being bitchy" part. Yes, it's unpleasant, but you'll eventually get through it.

There are some medications that may or may not help, I don't want to recommend anything that might make the situation worse though. Best of luck quitting.

I'll be the first to recommend cannibis because it will shame all your cigarettes and make all your wildest dreams come true (Or at least ease nic w/d).

I know how frustrating this is especially breaking the cycle when working a stressful job. Don't give up you will eventually get where you want. Taking a vacation might help but you'll need to make other sorts of changes too I wager.

If you find something that works don't hesitate to share, I'm in the same boat.

Lol this is the multi-billion dollar question, but the answer, as described by CH, is to tough it out. Dont do patches or any of that shit, if you really need something, buy some amphetamine, similar effects without the tar :)

I agree with just going cold turkey. No patches to give you a psychological boost. Just don't smoke. Even the most intense cravings only last 5-10 minutes, so read a magazine story, masturbate or boil an egg or something.

2.5 months since my last cigarette :-)

i recommend reading the easy way to stop smoking by allen carr. also, change your diet. healthy diet will reduce cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms.

I have been using the nicorette inhaler..supposed to use 6 cartridges a day but im only needing one. I smoked over a pack a day. Im also reading, chewing gum, blowing bubbles lol, drawing, writing ect....i also keep a list of reasons i dont wanna smoke near me...but im doin pretty good so far.

I like the patches for me.
Gum doesn't do anything for me.

I want to take Chantix, but my doctor wont prescribe it to me bc he thinks it will make me crazy. However, I hear Chantix works.

Quitting smoking has got to be hard if you know your mom smokes. Did you tell her to hide the cigarettes?

Smoking is really awful and it will kill you, so if you do need to go on something in the meantime temporarily to quit, do it and don't feel guilty.

I feel like it is safer to do occasional opiates than to smoke regularly. and everyone thinks I am crazy for saying that.

I smoked for 6 years, 15-20 cigs per day. I quit a month and a half ago. Here's what I did:
Weeks 1-2: Took Chantix (it really does reduce cravings) + 4mg Nicotine gum as needed
Weeks 3-4: 21 mg/day Nicotine patch
Weeks 5-6: 14 mg/day Nicotine patch
And I started on the 7 mg/day patch today. It's been an extremely easy transition from a pack/day habit. The first 2-3 days I thought about smoking a lot, now I don't really get cravings. The only time I want to smoke is when I'm drinking at a bar and see the people outside smoking.

Money saving tip: 2 mg and 4 mg Nicotine Gum are the exact same price. If you smoke like a half a pack/day, buy the 4 mg and just chew half a piece. Also, the Kroger generic nicotine gum doesn't seem to work as well as the Rite-Aid gum.

I've smoked for 27 yrs now. I started Chantix. I think it is going to work. I feel like smoking is an unrewarding chore and I have only been taking chantix 3 days., The usual chantix plan is that you smoke as usual for a week taking the drug, then quit. I can see quitting being easy but wonder abourt what happens when I give up the chantix.

for those using chantix, especially with this crowd, please be really careful since it can lead to depression, thoughts of suicide, etc etc. enablers like this are no bueno for the drug addled BL community. :)

when i quit smoking last year, i got really lucky. got really sick and was painful just to smoke, so that took care of that first three days of nicotine withdrawal. then after that it was just the pyschological habit. i realized that i was making time to smoke. without smoking, i had all this free time. which during that, all i wanted to do was smoke. just occupy those times with other things. also take yourself away from situations that will tempt you to smoke. bars especially. at least until your will power is a bit stronger.

i agree with healthy diet and exercise. a few months ago, stress has caused me to relapse, but im back on trying to work on it. ive had a cig a day these past couple days. way better than the half a pack to a pack a day i was used to.

good luck.

I like the gum... quitting again at the moment. Last time I was off them for over a year so shouldn't be a problem now I have the commitement to quit again.

I hope nobody minds me replying like this. First, I'd like to say thank you everyone! You were all very helpful.

I'm going to look up that book shortly, thanks! I already have a relatively healthy diet (I'm Vegan [except for smoking]), though there is always room for improvement.

Yes, but I feel bad for those who are around me, especially my mom since she gets the brunt of it.

It is though since my mom smokes. There's no need to hide the cigs anymore--I used up her bumming carton (lol, she bought realllllly shitty smokes to give to people when they bum so they won't again), and the ones she smokes are terrible, though I would NEVER take ANY on her. The bumming carton were hers but they were "free to give away to friends if they want one of yours."

i'm going to move this over the Healthy Living. sorry dudes if it doesn't fit there, maybe BDD.
Thank you for moving it. I wasn't really sure where to put it! I think it fits.

I don't plan on trying any medications to help with quitting--I took antidepressants to get rid of my depression and tried killing myself three times. Not what antidepressants should do. So, yeah, no medications. I've been tempted to use Lortabs though--I've done them in the past and when I'm on them, I rarely want to smoke, except while I'm at work... I think once I get a better job (should be soon... Waitin' for someone to quit, lol) it'll be a lot easier. Working with the public is hell. You're right, it is mostly a psychological habit. However, for me at least, if I don't have a cig I get intense headaches and body aches and whatnot. Oh well, if I can get through the first week or two (last time it took six weeks to feel physically better) I should be fine. And yes, one a day is a lot better than a half pack or a pack a day!

Once again, thank you everyone! Have yet to set a date for the quit, but I need to be done by the end of August. I was going to plan to be quit by the end of the year... I've upped it to August.

I've found the lowest dose (step 3) of the nicotine patches help, I think the first step is over kill and you can double up with two step 3s for a day or two if needed.

IMO nicotine can be tapered quickly and rapidly. Thats just me. It is very important to find a hobby to replace smoking immediately. I suggest eating healthy and exercising.

I really liked the gum, but I am mainly a snus user and the gum can kinda remind me of the stuff.

On day 2 of a quit now. Had four days but I slipped up. I quit for over six months last year. I want to make it final this time.

Cant quit smoking cigarettes. Do E-cigarettes work??

Hey guys,

So i've been a pack a day smoker for around 8 years give or take. I quit smoking cold turkey a couple months ago lasted 4 months without cigarettes. Had one cigarette and was instantly addicted agian. This time the addiction got a bit worse and I'm smoking closer to a pack and a half a day. I've tried quitting cold turkey but cant even go 2 hours without smoking lol. I've tried patches and gum with no luck. My question is has anyone had success with E-Cigarettes I dont really know much about them or where to get them but they seem like my only hope.

There have already been a few threads about e-cigarettes if you want to have a search for them.

In terms of your addiction, e-cigarettes are not going to help you quit because:
a) you're still getting just as much nicotine, the addictive chemical in cigarettes, and
b) you're still going through the actions of smoking with an object that looks/feels like a cigarette, so it's providing that stimulation in your brain of that part of the addiction.

Is it healthier?? Well you're not getting the smoke/tar/nasty chemical part of the cigarette, but you're still getting the nicotine, which is not shown to be carcinogenic in itself, but may promote carcinogenic/mutagenic processes.
