Does anyone have some solid information on this? Awhile ago I read an article by a doctor talking about how nicotine by itself is barely addictive, and it is the natural MAOIs found in tobacco which cause the real neurotransmitter jumps which lead to tobacco addiction.
Personally, I smoked for seven years and never felt actual nicotine withdrawal, just a minor longing for a smoke. No physical symptoms whatsoever short of a mild uneasiness. I never inhaled cigarettes very deeply, and now I pretty much realize it was the fixation of having something to inhale. I use e-cigarettes now, and haven't smoked an actual cigarette in at least four or five months and am pretty sure I'll never want one again. Now, the fact that a deep drag on an e-cigarette doesn't feel anything like one on a cigarette makes me feel that this MAOI story is true. I reckon that there are good amount of people who smoke cigarettes for that 'something to do' - the ritual process, more than the actual nicotine.
Anyone know of any scholarly articles discussing this, or articles measuring neurotransmitter level changes caused by pure nicotine Vs. full spectrum tobacco?
