i realize there aren't a whole lot of you here that are hockey fans, but for those die hards here, i figured this thread would be appreciated. even those of you who aren't hockey fans, i'm sure some of you will still appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the coolest sport on earth. ;)

if you hate em let em die, if you love em let me know and i'll post some more of my favorites. :)

not a problem pinhole.

the red wings have a die hard hockey culture who've developed a tradition of throwing octopus on the ice during (typically) the playoff games. back in the early days of the nhl in order to win the stanley cup, you essentially had to have 8 wins in the playoffs... the red wings won the cup and a small market owner in detroit who (i believe) owned a seafood store grabbed some octopi to throw on the ice... the 8 tentacles signify the 8 wins it took to win the stanley cup and ever since then it's been a tradition as it caught on, to throw octopi on the ice for good luck and other such occasions. nowadays though it's getting to be so much that they've been threatened with delay of game penalties because they can't get the games going until the octopi are cleaned up off the ice. so it's beginning to be considered more of a problem than it has in the past. they still let it happen, but it's kept to a relatively calm level anymore.

thanks! i'm thankful to have some appreciators. like i said even if someone doesn't like hockey, they could appreciate the quality of the photography here. :)

...and the Brit was confused no more. :D

Cheers dude, that was an interesting story. I'm a big fan of idiosyncratic fandom such as that; it makes sport all the more interesting, I think.

We get a couple of games a week shown over here but they're on in the early hours of the morning, so I rarely get to watch them. I've followed a few Stanley Cup finals though & they were fantastic entertainment for the neutral. I'm just in awe of their skill & powers of endurance & stamina. It's such a ferocious & dramatic sport.

Cool thread. :)

no problem pinhole. :)

and yeah hockey (whether people want to admit it or not) is a fucking BRUTAL sport. everything from the level of skill it takes, the the level of toughness, to the level, of strategy, endurance... etc. it's a serious SERIOUS game.

i'll get some more up in a bit, i just don't have them all uploaded to my photobook account.

fuck yeah hockey is tought man...I played for almost 8 years and Ive never been hurt or hurt people as bad in any other sport it my life

this one is one of my favorite all time hockey shots. this picture is so fucking epic in so many ways.

the 2nd image... whether you like sean avery or not... is such an amazingly serene image. it helps exemplify the isolation within a players head in SERIOUS SERIOUS times during an important game.

i cant speak for them all, but all the one's ive posted are from the nhl.com website, every day they have a "frozen moment" and if you click on the sliver that you can see on the main page, it brings up the entire full resolution image and it's amazing. that's what i've been posting.

good shots all around though. kudos guys.
