so i thought once i again... i would get this started. nobody else gives a shit (just kidding, i know there's a few of you). anyways... i'll contribute more as far as the other teams go, but for now here's a copy and paste of something i wrote about the blue jackets (obviously my favorite team).

blue jackets 08-09 season... playoff bound!!!

today is september (sometime) and i'm gettin a little antsy. the blue jackets are going to be much better this year than they have any other year. i know this because a.) marty mcfly hooked me up phatty with a copy of the almanac he brought home with him.

the jackets made the necessary improvements to accommodate this season despite the fucking assy ottawa sun times saying they'd be 30th in the NHL with a side note stating "no necessary improvements made." what the fuck have they been doing during the off season cause they weren't watching what i was. the truth is... we wanted a number one center... and yeah umberger's a few cents short of a dollar, but i think he'll do much better than people think. word is, he's a natural center. throw him in the mix with nash and huselius and i think we've got a pretty top notch line right there. huselius will be a great replacement for zherdev (who i'll miss) for many reasons... one being, he's got all the moves that zherdev has, but he's a little more tried and true, been there done that. he may only be a secondary scorer, but he's proven he can play that role. zherdev, as much as i love him, has proven that he COULD be a good scorer, but never seemed to put the finishing touches on. dazzling moves only get you so far when you put the puck right on the keeper.

anyways... that's just our top line. we've still got returning vets like modin and peca who both did well for us (while healthy) last year. provided they can stay relatively healthy this year... i expect both of them to provide us with some more secondary scoring (which seems to be a common theme, but guess what... we got none of it last year, so if we get it this year which i suspect we will... i'll be a happy man). adding torres to our line up was a good move in my opinion also, we've got some toughness throughout our ranks that we haven't had in the past. chimera's been a workhorse since day one and his improvements last year were monumental. on paper he looks like another plug, but when you watch him play, he's winning battles to loose pucks, putting the bodies on the boards, and he's fast as FUCK! chimmer always gives 100% (none of that 110 bullshit that's impossible). we'll get to see brassard more this year and he's even been said to have a shot at moving up through the ranks... as it is right now, he's more than likely gonna be centering the third line with chimera and voracek. i expect voracek to likely crack the top six though and MORE than likely have an extended stay if he plays even half as well as he's expected. filatov is even a potential to play up this year, but he missed camp due to an injury (that will by all accounts be 100% before the regular season starts). filatov is said to potentially be nhl ready as it is??? i could have heard that wrong, but that's the word that i got. regardless... that's our offense in a nutshell and i'm pretty confident that we'll get our secondary scoring this year... which means... less pressure on our keepers because they'll get the goal support they didn't get last year.

our defense is completely revamped having acquired fedor tyutin and christian backman from the rangers in the trade with zherdev. i'm absolutely stoked for tyutin. as has been said, he's one of the most underrated defensemen (i don't remember who told me that though). i can't really speak for him as i never watch the rangers play, but i've heard nothing but good things. backman is someone that i think tends to fly under the radar a bit. i remember him being pretty solid last year so i'm interested in seeing what he does along side more than likely tollefsen (who's a fucking absolute BEAST and one of my favorite players all around). klesla's coming off a great year last year. he picked it up in the second half of last season and looked REALLY good defensively all year. he's definitely improved on his power play and over all just moving the puck. i don't think we'll have as many problems from the back end this year by ANY means. a lot of people think it was a stupid move to pick up mike commodore... i actually think it was a pretty good move, myself. he's big, tough, and a seasoned veteran. ottawa fans are just naysayers because they're sick of being disappointed (haha... sorry keiths). i really think commodore will be a great fit with our defensive system, which might i add has more depth than it's ever had. we have guys like methot barely even registering on the depth chart... and methot is a solid defenseman for anyone who hasn't gotten the chance to watch him play.

naturally leclaire is coming off a career year which i only expect him to get better now having a full on arsenal of weapons in front of him and a defensive corps that will crush most opponents and shut them down (yeah i said it!). norrena... despite what anyone says... is in my opinion a terrific back up. he's more aware of what's going on than practically anyone i've watched in the net. his eyes are always locked on the puck, his body is always square to the shooter, he can read angles like the best of them... the only thing i can really see wrong with him is that he's not as acrobatic as some of the younger guys, but where he lacks in flashiness he makes up for in technicality. i'm not at all worried about soft goals when either of them are in net (though they're bound to happen sometimes).

and overall... just the fact that we have a team "identity" as they've been craving for so long will finally put to rest the fact that we don't know who we are. we're a tough, competitive, defensive oriented team with some highly skilled forwards who are about to break lose on y0 ass!

eat it bitches!

so i'll say one thing's for sure. the western conference central division may be one of the toughest this year with the additions to the red wings roster and the blackhawks roster. the wings picked up hossa who's going to add an offense to an otherwise otherworldly offensive team with a solid defense and a stonewall goaltending situation. they've lost hasek this year, but picked up conklin who spent some days in columbus where we warmed him up for a great stint in pittsburgh. i think conklin will prove to be a great back up should osgood hit the brick wall or get injured. also, the hawks picked up huet for the net with i believe khabibulin backing him up... fucking rad. huet is somewhat underrated. he's highly touted and all, but he flies under the radar more than you'd think. he's a good keeper and kept the habs in contention most of last year until the trade deadline saw him taking the caps (along side their pick up of fedorov and their changing of the guard making boudreau the head coach) to the playoffs to be an actual contender.

point being. i think as good as the jackets should prove to be this year, it's gonna be tough because they're still gonna have to defeat their division rivals in detroit (always tough, but they've got their number as of late), chicago (about to be one of the best teams on the ice), st louis (stagnant, but has some talent... can't rule them out), and nashville (who ALWAYS provides us with a problem. they're a quiet sniper for sure. good team, usually flies just short of the radar).

i forget what my point was... but it's gonna be some good hockey this season.

here's to hoping that the thrashers don't repeat an 0-8 start like last season! 8( ;)

I think the NHL is slowly starting to make a comeback to the good ole days of the late 80's early 90's. the outdoor game was a great idea, and I think they should do more than one this year.

around here, attendance at Capitals games has doubled from last year and I'm actually not the only Caps fan in my neighborhood anymore.

it's no surprise that caps games' attendance is going up with the obvious emergence of alex ovechkin. some of the other young talent coming up through washington's system though is pretty good too. in sticking with cliche's though alex the great put washington back on the proverbial map in the hockey world. however, ever since boudreau took over the team... they've looked like a legitimate contender rather than a shitty team with an established 1st overall draft pick.

i would have created a new post about this, but as the hockey fan population here isn't exactly huge, it wouldn't get much notice so i'll just post it here instead.

alexei cherapanov, the rangers' first round draft pick, had been playing for omsk in the russian league when he suddenly collapsed on the bench and was pronounced dead later in the evening.

TSN's article on his death.

jesus, did you guys see this the other night?! before the avs game aired, there was a def leppard gig going on and they brought out the stanley cup and let the band pass it around. the lead singer goes to set the cup on the stand and puts it freaking upside down!! i'm amazed there wasn't an ice-full of people out there about to kick his ass!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmxZyr-juB8

^ haha... yeah, i saw that. at first i thought they were trying to make some sort of lame ass statement by doing it, then i found out, they're just plain not hockey fans, they're footie fans and therefore didn't know the cup was upside down when he put it on the table. is it THAT complicated??? i mean... there's names on it, it's got a cheap plastic plate on the bottom... the CUP is open ended... wtf??? :D i don't like def leppard anyways, but seriously.

and pharcyde... haha... if it was any other team in the western conference, i'd say you're full of shit, but the red wings... i could legitimately see them repeating IF they get past the jackets. :D

we have a good team this year, with a line up full of players who fit together like a puzzle, the only problem is that raffi torres is on the IR from falling on his arm during a fight with ben eager in preseason and michael peca is suspended indefinitely for "abuse of an official" after grabbing one of the linesmen to get his attention to plea his case after he was slew footed in front of the net knocking him down and leaving him unable to recover in time to prevent a goal from being scored. he got a game misconduct at first, then they suspended him. come on... we made a ton of off season moves to work on getting into the playoffs, now the league wants to keep us out of it. they just don't want columbus to succeed i guess. :(

Woot Hockey thread. I need one of these so bad. I have no-one to talk about the NHL on a regular basis, being based in the hockey bastion of Sydney, Australia.. :D

ryan, you guys got Torres off us for Brule, which is a good move. He's a good player, good physical presence but rather streaky. He dominated the 'Nucks for us for a few good seasons and was one of our key players during our run to the finals in 05/06.

Any of you guys play fantasy hockey?

yeah, brule could be good for you guys, but when he was in columbus i think he got discouraged from going back and forth between columbus and syracuse so you could see his confidence fluxuate, but when he was up for a little bit at a time (like 5 games or something) he'd make some pretty plays. he's got a lot of talent though. i think torres will fit well with the mold we've got in columbus now. :)

haha... and yeah i'm a nerd... i have 3 fantasy teams. :D

Brule's going to stay down in the minors unless one of our top 6 gets knocked around. There's no point putting talented playmakers like him or Schremp on the fourth line to play 6 minutes. Much rather those two linking up in the AHL and breaking scoring records ANY DAY.

Ducks still winless, would have been total annihilation if it weren't for Hillier in goal.

Oilers need more games to start clicking but we're only two games in compared to 5-6 for some other teams (like the Rangers). I guess they opened in Europe with a pair of games, but I want more action! hehe

the ducks look horrible right now. a friend of mine who's just getting into hockey for the first time this season is playing fantasy hockey in a league with 6 of our coworkers, he had giguere and nabokov as goalies (it was an autopick draft) and i traded him to get nabokov reassuring him that JSG is a great netminder too, but i didn't expect the ducks to look THIS bad. JSG's stats aren't what they should be right now, but it's not nearly all his fault. they've been playing shit defense and haven't produced anywhere NEAR enough offense.

Hope the jackets get one up on the Canucks.

Any insider tips on CBJ players I might be able to pick up in fantasy on the cheap?

thanks! and yeah the jackets won tonight! :D

as far as inside tips go. it depends what kind of league youre in i suppose. but voracek has been doing well. he's a good play maker, but i would assume depending on how many teams there are in your league that he may already be taken. if he's not, he could get you a good amount of assists and potentially a 20-30 goal scorer in his rookie season. he's also on our top PP unit so PP points are a definite probability. also filatov could be a good guy to pick up. i don't think he'll end up with as many points as voracek simply because he's still learning the north american game, but he's got a nose for the net and has a good shot. he's confident and has looked pretty good so far. i think he could also be a 25+ goal scorer, but i don't look for him to rack up as many assists as someone like voracek.

another more established player that probably is taken, but if he's available could do you some good would be kristian huselius. he's looked really good for us so far and is playing on a line with nash and umberger not to mention he's on our top PP unit. him and rick nash have developed some good chemistry so far and huselius netted another goal tonight.

Hrm interesting info on Voracek. If he's getting the minutes, then I wouldn't mind looking into him at all. Do you think he can carry that form through the rest of the season? I'm all for getting on the bandwagon early especially on young stars.

FYI, if you can get your hands on Cogliano, I'd definitely recommend him. 2nd line, great hands, beautiful skating and good vision. I sort of wish he'd be better in the faceoffs but you can't win them all. He's set for a breakout year, more of a playmaker but he can shoot if he has to.
