The best attitude out there is to think like a DJ and consider in what direction do you want to shift your mood/buzz/consciousness/energy by selecting a different chemical/record to throw in the mix. Transitions are important here, if it's bumpy or incompatible, your going to kill the energy, or get paranoid, or at worst, die.
The worst attitude is to consider your mouth a garbage disposal and that MORE DRUGS=MORE BUZZ, and proceed to ingest whatever you can get your hands on. This is our preferred method of self-disposal for us septics here (i'm a Yank).
Taking the DJ metaphor to its logical conclusion, you wouldn't take a record you've never listened to and try to cue it at the peak of the night with the crowd bumping. It's too high pressure, you've never heard it before, you have limited time and gaps. The song may have the percussion come in or come out at any time. A couple listenings at home would have done you so much better, given you a feel for it, let you know the nuances of it, helped you figure out entry/exit points for this and other substances.
Another metaphor, you get a lot of action, you've been working on this one girl you really dig, like you wanna hold her hand and watch the sunset with her. She signals that she might let you get a little action. The party you're at turns into an orgy, gets kinda sleazy and indiscriminate. Do you get it on with her right there, or do you find some privacy and be alone with her for your first time together?
Lastly, we have all the time in the world to try out different combinations. Most people have been content to be single drug users until recently. We've built up our tolerance, now we need synergistic reactions to put a smile on our face.
Check erowid.org and lycaeum.org, people post trip reports of polydrug use and positive and negative synergistic actions. Read it, and you'll see a pattern.
If you're combining alcohol indiscriminately with hard drugs you're putting your life in danger, not to mention you have a lot of learning to go. The reason people sound austere is that attitudes like that X 10,000 people equals a major problem for a scene, city, or country.
Tried and tested combinations:
GHB + Coke (the hedonist's aphrodesiac)
MDMA + ketamine (bumps in the middle)
MDMA + GHB (to come on and come down)
MDMA + LSD (towards the middle/end)
MDMA + mushrooms (same)
MDMA + speed (towards the end, dancing/partying energy)
MDMA + 2-CB (probably the best 'flip')
any psychedelic + nitrous oxide (crossing dimensions)
alcohol + coke (instant asshole + nasty hangover, but loads of fun)
LSD then alcohol (makes drinking nights more interesting, mellow amounts)
Pot + anything (to enhance a little, very fun to take mellow doses of psychedelics and bump them up with some herb)
dangerous combos:
alcohol + GHB (death)
alcohol + MDMA (killed roll, dehydration)
alcohol + depressants (rock star death, choke on puke)
ketamine + cocaine
speed + cocaine (exploding heart syndrome)
bad choices:
lsd + mushrooms
MDMA + cocaine (seritonin has to compete with dopamine, both are very 'dry' drugs)
alcohol before anything (poor judgement, poor dosaging strategy, dehydration, poor motor skills)
Final point - there's other factors out there that will significantly enhance your buzz that don't require the use of an illegal substance. Investing your energy into these wlll bring you back tons more benefit.
These include: frame of mind, diet, vitamins/herbs/supplements, set and setting, companionship, breathing, stretching, meditation, massage, tolerance, music, chi and sexual energy, comfort with your body, dancing.
Synergy is not just two different drugs working together, it's a milion factors working in symphonic resonance to create the reality of the present moment. Maximize it.
peace, seppo from SF
