Two arrested over $27m ecstasy haul
About 115kg of ecstasy worth up to $27 million has been found concealed in a shipment of industrial equipment, leading to the arrests of two men in Wollongong.
Customs officers found the drugs when they examined the contents of a shipping container that arrived in Sydney from Europe in mid-July.
X-ray technology and detector dogs were used to examine two large wooden crates, turning up an estimated 390,000 tablets in packets hidden in seven steel filter pumps.
Customs and Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched a joint investigation which ended in Wollongong on Tuesday with the arrest of two Dutch nationals - a 74-year-old man and a 24-year-old man.
They have both been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a prohibited import, possessing a trafficable quantity of a prohibited import and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a prohibited import.
"The seized drugs have a potential street value of $27 million," said Customs NSW regional director David Collins.
"This seizure is among the 10 largest MDMA (ecstasy) seizures ever made in Australia."
An AFP spokesman said the two men appeared in Wollongong Local Court and were remanded in custody to face the same court on July 30
