NEWS: The Age - 30/07/08 'Dope smokers not so mellow'

Mr Blonde said:
I wonder how many of those calls had to do with actual problems caused by cannabis or more mundane topics like parents worried their kids are smoking pot.

I would love to see them attempt to answer this.

Personally only know around 10 people who are incessant pot smokers. They are so placid it's not even funny. In fact these people struggle to say a bad word yet show any sign of violent tendencies.

Erm, at most I was smoking about half a gram a day for a month and was so damn chilled violence was simply non-existent in my psyche. %)

For all the flaws that everyone have pointed out, this study is absolutely ridiculous. No need to say any more

Don't fool yourselves. I interact with a lot of people from all over the health professions, and they all laugh when people get on a high horse about whether studies are done fairly. There ARE links between THC and mental health issues, even if the artical above gets nebulous around the specifics. And every habbitual user I know (thats quite a few) has quite pronounced memory problems and at least gets aggitated and frustrated over insignificant things and throws child-like temper tantrums when things don't go their way - and beyond that a disturingly large proportion of them have acute mental health problems, scitzophrenic and delusionally paranoid. It's no better for you than getting drunk every day, though it might hurt less the next morning.

Uhh yes thast nice if the health professionals laugh.. I'm sorry but what point exactly does that prove? Your own reasoning shows the same flaws as the said study, so I'm not surprised that you clearly dont understand why it is completely invalid. These habitual users - how do you know that these aren't the reasons that they decided to use cannabis? In my experience, in many cases this is true. You throw around terms like 'acute mental health problems' trying to sound intelligent, obviously you don't realise that acute simply means of sudden onset, as opposed to chronic which means long term. Also, you should learn how to spell schizophrenic.

I believe there was a study sometime last year that claimed to show links between marijuana usage and mental health problems that took into account whether people had mental health issues prior to using the drug.

^Link? (I'd hate to find it was done by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre).

Frankly, i think its a bit of a moot point. Consuming cannabis (or any drug for that matter) is a calculated risk on so many fronts (legal, mental health, physical health etc) and one that I along with many others am prepared to take.

What would be nice is less sensationalism.

Well no, the point would be that the argument that studies aren't fair and that they aren't taking prior mental health into account is false (well, after that study anyway). But there would need to be more research done rather then just the one piece.

I believe the article will be on BL here somewhere, I may try and find it later.

That isn't a moot point at all for me, if I ever read that article (i.e. if it is found) it would greatly deter me from ever smoking cannabis again. But then again I'm the kind of guy who preloads with vitamin c and takes an SSRI after a roll, so I'm on the cautious side. I have done a lot of personal research on cannabis that led me to believe that it was a safe drug for me to use. If I read research to the contrary it would greatly alarm me.

One thing I do realise with cannabis is that it obviously has noticable effects, and as such when I use the substance for a long time I will get the reverse of these effects when I cease using it. So I often realise that after I stop using cannabis I will be less hungry, less amused by everything, extremely irritable, sleep badly and have fucked up dreams (as opposed to no dreams normally). This much I do know. I also have read in many places that cannabis is actually neuroprotective and neurogenerative.

^ If you've been using for a long time then I'd say you're OK in terms of possible mental health problems. I will try and find that article...
