Little health benefit seen in 'light' cigarettes, US report shows
By DAVID BROWN

Low-tar and "light" cigarettes have not measurably improved public health in the past 30y ears, and for most smokers switching to them has not lowered the risk of developing lung cancer, a new United States Government report shows.
While in theory low-tar cigarettes are less hazardous, that is generally offset by smokers' tendency to consume more cigarettes, or inhale deeper or faster, the research says. Whether people who smoke low-tar cigarettes from the start will have lower cancer rates is uncertain.
"Clearly, smokers have bought into the illusion of harm reduction and the deception of low-tar," said David Burns, a physician at the University of California at San Diego, who oversaw the analysis.
"The sad result is millions of smokers who have lost the opportunity to quit." ...

someone told me this and I rekon it's clever.
Smoking normal smokes is like jumpig from the 10th story of a building and smoking lights is like jumping from the 8th story.
Either way you're going to fuck yourself up :P
Still hasn't stopped me dammit!!

I always switch to lites when I am about to quit. I generally quit once or twice a year for a few months and will go down to 1's or 2's for a month or so.
For the record, I smoke because I want and choose to. I quit every now and then because I feel my health drop below a level I am comfortable with. I know I'd be a lot healthier without em, but I enjoy em.

Everyone knows cool hit it's peak in 1974.

I remember reading somewhere, back in the day when I enjoyed the delicious fresh taste of PJ Super Milds, that light cigs have lots of wholes in the filter paper. Apparently these wholes are strategically located 10mm (I think) down the filter. Now nicotine testing machines go to the 9mm mark. The holes effectively reduce the amount of nicotine you get, so when tested they come up as 4mg nicotine (or whatever they are). But when you smoke, usually your fingers or lips cover that area, so you get more nicotine than you think. If you rip up a filter on a light ciggy, you will see these holes. Has anyone else heard this? It sounds kind of paranoid, but it is not like cigarette companies are known for their morals. This could help explain why peoples health has not improved.

Actually, my brother told me that exact same thing, babydoc_vic. Can't verify it but he seemed to think it was a big controversy in the media and such.
