Tigers' pair get six-month ban for drug use
Thursday 29 March 2001
(BT: Author unlisted)
Claims of depression and intoxication last night failed to save Wests Tigers pair Craig Field and Kevin McGuinness from a six-month suspension as the National Rugby League Drugs Tribunal took its toughest stance yet on recreational drug use.

Coke, pills... sounds like Rugby players are into the same gear as Aussie Rules players. The one consolation I could mention is that this lot came to air through a random drug test rather than someone being hurt.
Apparently their tribunal is taking a hard line on the issue. The minimum penalty is 12 weeks out, and they were given 6 months.

I saw the report on the late news last night, apparently one took a cocaine tablet - in all the years I've been around coke, I've never seen it in a pill. And for that matter I've never seen it work effectively when ingested (unlike speed in champagne, all coke does is get wet and not work!)
Must be something to do with their amazing level of fitness that makes them able to squash a few lines of coke into tablet form!

It says in the Age article one admitted to taking coke and then a pill which he "didn't know" what it was because he was too drunk. The other admitted to taking pills he thought were ecstacy.

that's a joke

so the only argument is that they're setting bad examples for the kids and bringing the game into disrepute.
Well fark they wouldn't be if the results of tests for non-performance enhancing recreational drugs weren't released!

BigTrancer,
The report on Sports Tonight was slightly different - both apparently said they swallowed a tablet - I suppose the thought being a tablet could have been anything, but to actually have to rack-up, roll the note and then snort it would probably make it look a little more intentional!
As for the idea that he didn't know who gave him the drug, why doesn't it ever happen to me?

Looks like "Yes, I took it but I didn't know what it was" is becoming the 2000's version of "Yes, I took a hit but I didn't inhale".

Personally I think that the whole thing is pretty stupid. The only reason kids know that they are snorting coke and dropping pills is cos they did a drug test and released the results. It is silly that these guys are getting busted for doing something that hurt no-one other than themselves. The only thing that happened would be a possible drop in their performance on the field.
I know this a whole new can of worms, but how do they determine that an illegal quantity has been consumed? According to a pamphlet I have from Dance Safe, ecstasy will not be detected after 1-3 days and coke 2-4, so they must have been really unlucky or the NRL must be really strict.
