The myth of drink spiking

Party season is upon us, so today I thought we'd talk about a subject that affects men and women alike, because we both end up dealing with the wreckage when it happens and the hysteria it causes the rest of the time: drink spiking.

Let me ask you all a question: if modern medicine could make a drug that was odourless, colourless and tasteless and knocked you out for hours, why the hell do sleeping tablets taste so bad?

Why does Aspirin, perhaps the most widely ingested medicine in the world, taste like a sugar-soap thick shake? Why does cough medicine taste like crap?

Why? Because it's almost impossible to make a drug that is odourless, colourless and tasteless and this is the great myth of the drink spiking that lurking behind every night club pillar is a loathsome creep who's armed with this mystery drug ...

The Australian Institute of Criminology's `National Project on Drink Spiking' report says that "the term `drink spiking' refers to drugs or alcohol being added to a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) without the consent of the person consuming it." (The Italics are mine.)

It is an interesting bubble in our collective morality that we rightly see adding a sleeping tablet to someone's vodka and tonic as wildly irresponsible, yet ordering a 60kg woman a double or triple without their knowledge is just a giggle.

In fact, adding extra alcohol to a friend or stranger's drink is the most widespread form of drink spiking in the country "but people don't see this as drink spiking", says Paul Dillon of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia.

The National Project on Drink Spiking report says that "despite considerable media and public perceptions concerning the prevalence of drugs such as flunitrazepam, GHB and Ketamine being used in drink spiking, the forensic evidence to date does not support these claims".

"Alcohol has tended to dominate results and it is not clear whether this is because (a) alcohol is commonly used to spike drinks, (b) other drugs have left the body by the time of testing and so only alcohol is left to detect, or (c) people are unaware how much alcohol they are actually drinking."

I reckon I've met a dozen girls (and one guy) who claim to have been spiked - and while I'm sure they all believe that to be the case, many people fail to take into consideration things like a day in the sun, dehydration and an empty stomach, then slam four or five Smirnoff Black Ices and when they feel dizzy and nauseous, think it's spiking.

"We also have this myth that it's impossible to detect spiking drugs, and that you can't taste or see them,'' says Dillon.

The majority of drink spiking cases probably involve sleeping tablets, "which leave a gritty, bitter residue" or the drug GHB, "which is the most vile-tasting, foul-smelling substance you can imagine", he says.

"Anybody who says they couldn't tell they'd been spiked with GHB was probably pretty intoxicated to start with," says Dillon.

And this is where the mythology of drink spiking does more harm than good.

I'd wager many people, young girls in particular, feel vulnerable because they're told they'll never be able to tell if their drink is spiked as date-rapists have perfected this "odourless, colourless and tasteless" magical drug.

In fact, in the majority of cases where drugs are used, you will be able to taste or see a change in your drink, so the best way you can avoid being spiked is to keep your wits about you when you're in strange or unfamiliar environments and not get slaughtered.

Personal responsibility when it comes to alcohol intake may be an unpopular message at this time of year (or any other time of the year for that matter) but it is the easiest thing you can do to safeguard against spiking.

"If you're stone cold sober it's gonna be a pretty brave drink spiker who tries it on," says Dillon, "that message gets lost in the drink spiking discussion. One of the big things about drinking to excess is that you are automatically more at risk."

This is not to say that sober people are never spiked, or that drunk people deserve it, but it's an unfortunate part of life that we all have to be aware of.

Actually if you had pure clonazepam or LSD they could be used as a drink spiker. Of course LSD used as drink spiking would just be evil, they'll remember any events of you trying to rape them or whatever ten times more than normal... but I bet none of you could taste a few mg's of clonazepam, and a girl with a few drinks in her wouldn't either. however whos going to source pure clonazepam... but the 2mg roche tablets do dissolve quite quickly, but they will taste something a bit minty and possibly see particles.

Especially liquid rivitril in the 5ml vials or the 100ml bottles (clonazepam, klonopin).. But halcion/hypam (has no taste) would do it for sure, it is 100% alot more stronger than any other sleeping aid on the market and dissolves quite easily. Drink spikers should get castrated, its really fucking sad to do that shit.

Let me tell you a story.

One night I was at a popular gay club in Brisbane, The Valley.

I approached some girls (friends of ours) who were being chatted up by some straight guys. The guys took off once we sat down.

we talked for awhile and then danced and came out side for a ciggie. While standing there, one of the girls (the driver for the night) started looking very "spacy" ..."I don't feel good" she said and passed out while standing up outside...smashed her head into the gas bottle attached to a not-in-use food warmer.

Now...this girl had 2 drinks and was to drive the others home that night.

Her pulse rate was so slow it was scary...her head was lolling about the place and she couldn't walk.

The club security were fantastic and escorted us out a side entrance where we put her in a car and drove (not drunk) to the hospital. We needed a wheel chair to get her inside.

Once inside we were confronted with the same bullshit you read here. "honey...the amount of people who come in here each Friday claiming to be drugged...."

Ok...Now compare this to the staff at the club who say they often find glasses with half dissolved pills of some sort in them

We took her home and she had a 3 day hangover from her 2 rum and cokes.

We went back to that same club that night and were standing in the same spot with another mate (a guy this time)...in mid conversation he says " Guys I don't feel so good"...and passed OUT.

Now we took him downstairs and the same security guards looked at us a little differently this time.

Our mate came too...had some water and got a cab home. He weighed about 30kg more than the girl so perhaps if it was the same stuff he was able to get over it quicker.

We left and went home. How can you stay in a club where you have escorted two friends out side after they have passed out standing next to you.

Either my cologne is too strong...or drink spiking does happen.

Surely no one is saying it doesn't happen. There's no doubt it does. Some people might choose to use it as an excuse for a few too many, but it does happen.

A friend's sister was drugged 2 weeks ago at a party. A doctor who was there observed her for few hours, performed some tests and made sure she was not left alone until she awoke.

The only feedback we got from her was fom pain, (knuckle on the collar bone) and the only was we could tell she was alive was watching her chest move up and down. Even a lighter flame near her propped open eyes did nothing.

She had had max 5 drinks, a line of meth, and a medium strength mdma pill, and is no light weight.

She was lucky (apart from getting drugged!) that she was surrounded by her friends and other good people.

You go to a hospital on Friday night and try and get help for being drugged....that's EXACTLY what they are saying.

The smart arse bitch even smirked.

It's probably relatively rare really... unless you have a drink so sweet it'd be extremely easy to spike with anything.. most things have a pretty unique taste and most benzos are very water soluble, that said they are ethanol soluble..

I definitely wouldn't say it doesn't happen. Probably less than people think but to say it doesn't happen at all is irresponsible, especially in situations like Slateroz' case.

If someone was already halfway gone I reckon that you could probably slip some ghb concentrate in a strong drink.

That sucks... I was referring more to researchers/medical spokespeople, but that is really wrong.

Just noticed the article is from the "All Men Are Liars" blog by Sam de Brito. I've quoted his blog before on BL, someone needs to get him to say hi here as he's an admitted drug user and drug use is a common theme in his blog.

Also don't forget the hundreds of comments attached to each blog:

Incidentally, I've met Paul Dillon. He's hot.

Media coverage of drink spiking in NZ is very similar. I've read quite a few articles, including some that claimed that claimed people were spiking drinks with MDMA. Right: a really expensive drug, with a strogn distinctive taste, that doesn't dissolve well - and is a stimulant! Basically I agree with the original article. An interesting read.

pure MDMA dissolves instantly in anything, well water or alcohol anyway.. but the taste, you'd have to be a retarded surfers paradise blonde chav to not notice that

Thanks, I didn't realise. (Only used to pills, which I think dissolve a little less well).

yeah some pills are pressed well or have weird binders, but the mdma will still make its way into an alcoholic drink over a couple of minutes. Roche 10 Valiums (SE Asian) and also Arrow generic brand Valium will dissolve very quickly in any liquid as well, same as pink upjohn xanax 1mg.. they wqould all be tasted though

yes... K is bitter... oral doses wouldnt be a good date rape drug at all.
hell a 50mg bump tastes like god-awful crap down the back of my throat after a couple minutes

*bump* Good read for pre NYE.
Maybe stop clogging the hospital up a bit with people panicking.
