POLICE locked down Fortitude Valley late last night with a string of drug raids on some of Brisbane's most popular nightclubs.
Dozens of people were charged as a drug-sniffing dog was randomly run past the lines of mostly young people waiting to enter the clubs about 11pm.

The operation -- involving almost 100 police and named Black Dog 2 -- targeted cannabis, MDMA (ecstasy) and amphetamines. Men and women suspected of possessing drugs were questioned and then made to stand with their hands against walls and legs apart while they were searched.

In April, a similar raid on four Valley nightclubs saw police arrest 13 people and seize almost 120 ecstasy tablets, as well as quantities of amphetamines and cannabis.

"We've identified that there is a drug problem in the Fortitude Valley area, so this is part of an ongoing strategy we have to combat illicit drugs in nightclubs," he said.

"It's a multi-pronged operation targeting drug offences, public order offences and traffic offences in the Valley entertainment precinct.

"We are utilizing the drug detection dogs and there's been a number of indications regarding drug use, a number of arrests have been made.

"It's a very busy night in the Valley, there's a lot of people out and really what we're all about is providing a safe environment for people to enjoy themselves."

Carseldine student, Andrew Gregg, 19, was searched but later released. "They are doing their job, they are trying to reduce the amount of drugs in the Valley," he said.

Brisbane student Eun Seo, 30, was "embarrassed' after being frisked by police. "I didn't do anything wrong and they made me feel like a criminal," she said.

"I just came to have a good time with my friend and this has ruined my night."

At the time of the April raid, Premier Peter Beattie warned that raid was "only the beginning" of a concerted effort to rid Brisbane's premier night-time entertainment district of drugs.

That raid -- the first of its kind under new laws allowing drug-sniffing dogs to be used in public -- sparked an outcry for "publicly humiliating" innocent people rather than targeting the drug trade's major players.

But Mr Beattie said the Government fully supported the use of drug-sniffing dogs. "If you don't use illegal drugs you haven't got a problem," he said.

"The police get 10 out of 10, from my point of view."

No shit sherlock, there always has been and always will be. That's what makes the Vally such a great place. :D

What number in the Walk the Line series is this???

I believe it's number 2.

I would have to say number 1 was highly unsuccessful if they only got 120 bikkies. I mean, 100 cops and almost the same amount of pills seized??? Thats $30 odd bucks per cop. Waste of resources IMO. The cops should make themselves useful and go and get the drunks in the city that are actually causing trouble.

^^^^^

It would have to be at least Number 3....... The third waste of QLD taxpayer dollars that could be better spent. :D

The outcome of these blitzs is a few nobody randoms getting a run in with the law and a big buzz about the police getting things done.

Call a spade a spade, its not 'making people safe' its police marketting

Had a friend come out of the valley bout 11pm last nite saying that police were everywhere. Was always going to happen, the place is so loose..and dirty!

I went out in the city instead of the valley for the first time in months so I missed the show.

Would have loved to ask John/Jenny policeperson whether they are worried people might swallow their stash rather than be busted.

Btw, is it bad form to moan while they frisk you?

So what did they find? A few shitty pills, an ice pipe and a come-down nugget?

I read some that its not illigal to not co-operate with police its only illigal to resist police. So would it be illigal to offer non voilet protest and just go limp when searched?

I think this is number three.

Here's the first two.

bne: police raid valley clubs
drug raids fortitude valley

10 out of 10? Maybe Mr Beattie should speak to anyone in the general area that night who was bashed, robbed or raped while a hundred police officers harassed young people on their night out.

From a similar article: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20584739-1702,00.html)
but with an interesting extra fact at the end...

"During the night Queensland Ambulance responded to five drug overdose cases in the Brisbane Central District – this is why we are out doing what we do," she said.

I wonder how many of these cases were caused by the opertaion?
Does anyone have a figure of overdose cases for a night like this normally? (ie without the dogs)

Yeah I swear you could get away with a lot in the city. The only place they hang is Hungry Jacks and they're noobs who are too scared to get out of their car anyway. Thwe only other time you see cops are desk cops coming from the roma court/station going on the bus or the train home from work.

The drug laws in this country are shameful

I think the cops have realised they cant win the the war as far as dealers go so they are ramping up intimidation of users. Its so pathetic, they say they are making a 'safe environment' but instead of educating and minimising harm they are increasing it because ultimately they will just drive drug use back underground. People arent gonna stop using drugs no matter what the cops do, they will just be more careful of where they use them. What the hell is wrong with the bloody authorities/establishment in this country, when are they gonna wake up?

^as long as it makes a good heading for Sunday mornings paper for John and Jenny Citizen to sit down and read over their morning breakfast, and gives hack politicians "strong" soundbites like
"If you don't use illegal drugs you haven't got a problem," "The police get 10 out of 10, from my point of view."
it's never going to stop.
So stupid though... overdoses would all have been from GHB.. doggies cant smell that

With the police these days it isn't about doing there job, its politics. The poilce don't do anything that wont give them either revenue (speed cameras) or good public relations.

I think the police know there not makeing a difference, but it looks like they are trying....
