NEWS: "Miners working high on synthetic grass", The Australian, 14.4.2011

Thanks for responding Sameria :)

I had a different impression about the extent of the testing (ie all employees tested - good for company PR)

There is huge portions of the mining sector that undergo no drug and alcohol testing at all. Most of the higher risk jobs ie working underground, operating heavy machinery do require testing but a lot of others, especially sub-contracting often do not.

Unless you fuck up really badly and kill someone or cause millions of dollars of damage you can usually get away with being under the influence on the job. If you can function and work you can usually get away with it. The more people you know the more you can get away with.

Mate, thats a load of shit.

In all mines they have daily random drug and alcohol testing, If you have any sort of accident/incident you will be tested. There is no tolerance for being under the influence of drugs on a mine site. Sometimes they will let a alcohol reading slide if it was from the night before, but not often

I can guarantee if somebody's shows positive they are gone. Some mines will given chances for cannabis, where they will make you do drug counselling, but this is happening less and less

^ I think Sameria said if you fuck up you will get caught, ofcourse they drug test after a serious incident but that does not neccessarily mean that drug testing is that prevalent especially in lower risk jobs as I think Sameria was suggesting.

^Precisely.

Also don't forget testing policy differs between mining companies, and even between different mines owned by the same company. There is more than half a dozen large mines around me and I know people working in different areas of pretty much all of them. So far I have spoken to only a few (mainly underground labourers) who undergo regular (ie weekly) drug testing.

Who you know also comes into play a lot. A couple of my mates are directly employed by large mining companies and party on the weekend with their senior supervisors. The supervisors give them a heads up when the drug tests are going to occurr and sometimes get them out of trouble for minor alcohol readings and the like.

Who the actual fuck smokes a doob before going on a shift?
Wouldn't one want the exact opposite effects? Idiots.

Umm - cannabis metabolites will show up in urine testing for at least a week - and much longer if you are a regular smoker. So it's not about sucking down a few cones before work - it's about what you get up to in your own time - which frankly isn't the boss's business.

...on a side note, i saw 2 adverts in The Western Australian newspaper this weekend, one was for a sex toy shop and the other i can't remember, both had in Bold Print "WE SELL KRONIC"
Coincidental? No, it's a well timed ad placement. They are using this story to market KRONIC, but at the same time they are shooting themselves in the foot.
IMO, if vendors are blatantly advertising this stuff for sale in the paper, they might as well take out a full page ad reading "SCHEDULE KRONIC NOW, MAKE IT ILLEGAL"
stupid vendors...
anywhoooooo, just my 2c. :)

I tried some of this "synthetic grass" earlier today. It has elements of a marijuana high yet lacks the crucial elements of the usual marijuana high. It's not as good as the real deal but is far stronger and requires much less to be on your ass. It lacks the giddy/euphoric feeling of real weed and also some of the calming qualities. Felt like a really sterile psychedelic.

As a weed lover, I found it to be a massive let down in terms of matching the effects of good quality bud, but was quite impressed by its potency (much stronger than bud, but stronger doesn't=better). In the end I didn't like it, it had very pronounced negative side effects including anxiety/paranoia etc, and the intensity was not something I was after when I just felt like a cone.

I also want to add that it blows my fucking mind this shit is legal and regular marijuana isn't... Blows... my... mind :\:(

... but that does not neccessarily mean that drug testing is that prevalent especially in lower risk jobs as I think Sameria was suggesting.

I wouldn't be so sure of this. I have worked in consulting to one of the larger 3 mining companies for a few years now. I can tell you that every single week there is random testing of office (as in capital city based) staff. Even for people who never go to a mine site.

I know people consulting for another of the larger 3 companies and they have the same deal.

Also as we are not staff of the miner, we have a one strike and we are out policy. (staff get 2 or 3 I think) If caught, it dosnt mean we lose our job with our employer though, probably just get a large pinapple and shifted to another project.

Its a shame this stuff is so expensive and not that great by the sounds of it.

When I intitially saw the price I nearly burst out laughing like who in the FUCK would pay more for this shit than actual weed, but I suppose if you hafta pee in a cup and are desperate some people will fork out (I prefer other ways to get around drug tests, I don't even have to smoke this shit to know it cant stack up to MJ lol) Also given that puckboy has suggested that it is more potent than marijuana it is entirely possible that this shit is as or more cost effective than marijuana once you take this into account.

Kronic gets me way more stoned than weed, and I can smoke a great quantity of it without the risk of "greening out". It's more convenient to go to a shop and buy it, than deal with some stoner drug dealer, and frankly I enjoy it more.

I tried some the other night, I havent smoked weed for several years. It did kick in, and it reminded me of why I dont smoke weed, stilted paranoid conversation, and general uncertancy. I was pretty ripped for about 20 mins, but the effects dropped off rapidly.

I figured I might as well sign up to bluelight and put my 2c worth in.

I've been smoking various types of kronic for about a year now. I buy kronic because its JWH, not THC and therefore does not show up in a standard drug test. I'd rather smoke normal weed but this stuff is just as effective and roughly the same price when bought in bulk.

Now that its featuring in the media everyone is getting up on their soapbox and talking about how it's taking the mining industry by storm and everyone is high at work. This might be true, but I doubt it as there is no way I could be fucked doing any work in 45 degree heat while stoned and people usually get fired when no work gets done.

Anyway we all got an email from BHP (who own the mine I subcontract to) which basically said they know about this stuff, we will get fired if we are caught doing it, and that they have brought in a contractor to advise them on how to test for it. This will probably be the kind of test that will show positive even if it was smoked while on break, which sucks as this stuff is still legal right now.

Guess I will have to find a new RC to get my kicks from.

Also does anyone on here have some sort of insight as to how long it will take for them to bring in the tests?

If you compare to how much research and development that went into road side drug testing I'd say unless they have already started researching a detectable metabolite then you will be safe for a year or so. Such testing takes money and BHP will have to fund this themselves. One issue will be the legal ramifications of not only false positives but also sacking employees for something that is essentially legal at the moment. They will have to be able to test for a metabolite that is active while under the influence not one that is still detectable 1 month later. They can get away with this foe weed as it is illegal but for kronic it would be a nasty legal test case that if I was BHP, I would want to avoid. Better to send out a threatening letter that basically says "we are watching you" and keep using your current testing kits until such time as it is possible to test for or better yet the government outlaws it.

My advise, become self employed.

Thanks for that reply, the issue about metabolites of a legal drug makes sense so hopefully the lawmakers don't act too quickly.

I know they test for various types of JWH and its metabolites in the US but it is illegal there, so I guess it's much easier to fire someone for a positive test over there.

I got curious and ended up trying some of this kronic stuff, imo its not bad but fairly fucking over priced and honestly quite a bit less enjoyable than marijuana. The 'pineapple express' one I had is definately more sedating than weed and at one point my friend and I did have a fair laugh at pretty much nothing. It just didn't feel as well rounded a high as cannabis and while I would smoke it again if it was on offer or buy it if I ever ran out of weed and could not get on I will not be rushing out to buy anymore. Perhaps some of the other varieties are better but I got the priciest one assuming it would be more potent.

I smoked with a number of my friends who are also long term cannabis dependant smokers and while only one flat out didn't like it, everyone tended to agree MJ was quite a bit nicer.

I would be surprised if any mining company wants to dip into their own pocket to develop tests for this stuff, they couldn't honestly think this shit was causing enough lost productivity to warrant it surely.
