Grieving parents' ecstasy plea

2nd January 2007, 6:30 WST

The grieving family of the 21-year-old woman who died of a suspected rare ecstasy overdose in Dunsborough have spoken out in the hope that other partygoers will learn from the tragedy that claimed her life.

Too distressed to speak publicly, the family released a statement through police saying they were shocked by the sudden and unexpected death of Michelle Jane Poore on Sunday morning.

They said the tragedy had a terrible impact on family and friends and urged potential users to bear this in mind before taking illicit drugs.

Ms Poore had travelled to Dunsborough with friends to celebrate new year on Saturday. Investigators have established that she consumed several heart-shaped pills in the mid-evening.

One of the woman's friends consumed half a pill but did not report any ill-effects.

Ms Poore started feeling ill and an ambulance was called to the Dunsborough Motel about 11pm on Saturday. By 2am on Sunday, she was dead.

"She would appear from our inquiries that she is just a normal, 21-year-old woman who does not have a long drug history, who, like many other young people, have taken to using drugs like this as part of the party scene,‘ Dunsborough Sgt Ian Clarke said.

"This shows that this is very dangerous, you just have no idea what you're taking. Unfortunately, she's not the first and she probably won't be the last."

A post-mortem examination is likely to be conducted this week to establish the cause of death.

Sgt Clarke said the fatal overdose was one of several worrying incidents involving drug and alcohol consumption during the long weekend.

"Since midnight from Dunsborough alone, we know of three women who have been taken to Busselton Hospital emergency department for alcohol and possible drug consumption," he said.

"They have been taken there because they have collapsed … in one case we found a woman lying on the side of the road by herself, which has huge potential implications."

Organised crime squad Det-Sen. Sgt Paul McMurtrie said heart-shaped ecstasy pills had appeared on the drug scene in recent months and were reasonably common. He said there had been regular, small seizures of the drug, which, like other forms of ecstasy, was amphetamine-based.

"Any amphetamine or synthetic drug, inclusive of ecstasy, is made illegally and has no quality control," Sen. Sgt McMurtrie said. "The quantity and quality of the drug can vary from tablet to tablet and there are inherent risks of taking illegal drugs."

Ecstasy, or methylenedioxyme thamphetamine (MDMA), is usually manufactured in Europe and imported to Australia via the Eastern States, though authorities have uncovered clandestine laboratories in some States, including WA.

Ecstasy overdoses generally occur when the body overheats and dehydrates, and users have also been known to die after consuming excessive amounts of water to compensate for the overheating sensation. The last known fatal ecstasy overdose in WA was in 2000.

Drug and Alcohol Office prevention and practice development director Gary Kirby said users could never be sure of what they were getting with illicit drugs, including ecstasy.

"We know the party season will continue for another two or three months yet, and people need to remember the best approach is not to use but if you're going to use you need to make yourself fully conversant with the possible risks associated with it, and there are things people need to do to keep themselves safe," Mr Kirby said.

Pink shape hearts?? hope there isn't a new and deadly batch that has hit OZ. but they say that she hasn't got a long history of taking drugs and i know that the pink shape hearts that i have had in the past month were pretty strong and they said that she took a few of them...

just goes to show that you have to know your limits and that your friends should be looking out for ya more often..

yeah few of my mates have had the pink heart shapes and said they were real strong and prob the strongest pill theyve taken in a while.

apparently tested up for MDMA. but couldve been MDEA too dependin which test kit they used.

...
who does not have a long drug history...

after reading those two sentences i was like, meh.

Two many new users re-dose as soon as their peak wears off. I'm talking people on their first pill even. They don't know how to continue the feeling without re-dosing. I also think this has to do with bad music (R n B, pop, top 40 crap etc..) because that music either kills a roll, or it just doesnt help you get into that subconscious state where the ecstasy will last and slowly taper down.

It took me many nights before I decided to have more than one pill, and I was desperate to get clean MDMA only.

So fucking do something about it and legalise them and maintain quality control!

Family of suspected ecstasy victim 'devastated' by loss
Tuesday, January 2, 2007. 10:24am (AEDT)

The family of a woman believed to have overdosed on ecstasy in the Western Australia's south-west at the weekend is begging anyone taking drugs to consider the potentially tragic consequences.

Twenty-one-year-old Michelle Jane Poore from Perth was socialising with friends at a hotel in Dunsborough on Saturday night, where it is believed she consumed several pills.

She died in the Busselton Hospital a few hours later.

The officer in charge of Dunsborough Police, Sergeant Ian Clarke, says family members are absolutely devastated.

Sergeant Clarke says they have issued a statement through police, urging people not to use illicit drugs, at least for the sake of their loved ones.

"It's quite clear that you're putting things into your body, that you have absolutely no idea what's in that," he said.

Police are also investigating who supplied the ecstasy to Ms Poore.

The most irritating thing about this whole article is that no where was the actual cause of death discussed. I find it disappointing, yet not surprising, that the autopsy has not even been conducted and yet the media is already chalking one up to the evils of ecstasy :\. For as much as we know, she could have died from any other ecstasy-related death, but not one specifically caused by MDMA or any other analogues.

Not that this makes the situation any less sad, however a few things were stated in the original article that ring alarm bells.

One of the woman's friends consumed half a pill but did not report any ill-effects.

she consumed several heart-shaped pills in the mid-evening

21-year-old woman who does not have a long drug history

To automatically assume from this that there is some dodgy batch of 'heart-shaped pills' going around WA is so typical. I mean, her friend did have half. If they were that toxic, then wouldn't logic suggest she should have at least experienced some adverse side affects?

And i mean, really, it is extremely irresponsible for the journalist / police to attempt to draw a link between one woman who has died, whilst having consumed an illicit substance, and then three other women who have been taken to the local hospital for alcohol and possible drug use. Who has any idea what these three other women were taken to hospital for, what they had consumed, what their symptoms were etc etc etc. Way to lump all drug users into one convenient little box. I mean, talk about another fear campaign :\

Almost any drug-related death, IMO, is a slap in the face of people who support a zero tolerance stance on drug use. Just because someone chooses to act foolishly with their drugs does not necessarily make the drug inherently dangerous. I do understand that if this woman simply had not of used then she would not have been in this tragic set of circumstances. However, as this case has proved, the reality is people are going to use and who knows, if she had of had better access to education and awareness about responsible drug use, her death could may have been avoided :(

Not wanting to fuel speculation but feel I should mention that a friend recently obtained heart shaped pills which were purple (NOT pink) in the Sydney region which had no reaction with the Mandelin reagent. Unfortunately I can not give you more details as I did not see them personally and they have now been discarded.

Persons I know have had multiple Pink hearts in late November and then most recently over the Boxing Day - NYD period, on all occasions without incident.

The unfortunate fact is that the police have indicated that there have been a number of seizures of the pink hearts already. Therefore, they would be in possession of the analyst results, or at least will soon be, once the tests are conducted. Therefore, pressure from the right people in the right places might result in the police releasing these results to the public, without people like you or I having to go out of our way to "send" pills overseas for testing, as has been mooted in another related thread.

The authorities know what are in these pills, and chances are it is not anything other than MDMA. The results for the supposed PMA laced red mitsubishis were released in late 2004 following the who-ha over these "killer" pills. They ended up containing 115mg of MDMA plus an unquantified amount of caffeine.

The data exists, they just need to tell the community. As I said in the Perth Pills thread, if the pills contain only MDMA and no other adulterants it actually fuels their argument that MDMA itself is potentially dangerous and the use of it can be fatal.

Of course, it remains to be seen what ultimately killed Ms Poore (the drug itself, a well known side effect of MDMA that experienced users are usually particularly alive to, stupidity, or something entirely unrelated to the actual consumption of the drug) and hopefully those results will be released with the same fan fare in due course. (Mr Candyslut's points are very well made and I agree with them entirely.)

At the same time it is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts must go out to her family.

I do feel for the girl and her family, but surely if there was an issue with these pills, there'd be more reports?

I myself have had these (assuming they're the same batch) and I very much doubt she passed away purely because of those pills. Maybe something she did as a consequence (too much water, something else she took) but I honestly can't think of any incident where someone died purely from taking too many pills. Sure, adulterated pills have caused death, but not strong ones.

Feel free to prove me wrong folks :)... but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Man charged after ecstasy death
January 03, 2007 04:35pm

THE boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman who died of a suspected ecstasy overdose in Western Australia's southwest on New Year's Eve has been charged with drug offences.

Michelle Jane Poore, from Woodvale in Perth's north, was celebrating with friends in Dunsborough on Saturday when it is believed she took several ecstasy pills.

An ambulance was called about 11pm (WDT).

Ms Poore was taken to Busselton Hospital but she died at about 2am on Sunday.

Police said they had charged Ms Poore's 23-year-old boyfriend, from suburban Pearsall, whom they alleged supplied her with the drugs.

He was charged by summons with possession of ecstasy, supplying ecstasy, possession of cannabis and possession of a smoking implement.

He will appear in Busselton Magistrates Court on January 19.

So just what message does this send to drug users now? Call an ambulance for your friend who is dying and we'll charge you with supply? Terrific... so in wanting to seem like they're doing something, the police are going to ruin someone else's life as well now. Good work WA Police :\
