NEWS: Ecstasy affects memory 15/1/04

I am interested by all these people stating that the memory loss reported could be attributable to many different causes. While this is true and no study is ever perfect, it is these findings are extremely provocative.

The reason you do a study with a large number of people is so that each group is considered 'Normal' - that is if there are x amount of people in group 1 who have had a poor memory from birth there will also be x amount of people in group 2 who suffer from similar problems. This has to do with the Law of Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem, which are the foundations of scientific research. Issues of confounding and blocking should always be addressed in this type of study in order to pass peer review

The idea is that by using large numbers of people who only differ in a single area (ie MDMA use), you can attribute differences to the use. The trouble is ofcoarse that statistically MDMA users are more likely to have used other drugs and/or come from different back grounds to non drug users. Nonetheless these findings are extremely interesting and not easily dissmissed.

The problem is that too many people on both sides of the argument allow their own emotions to shine through. This is just as noticable in the 'Oh no wont someone think of the Children!' camp as it is in the drug users world.

It is important to accept studies like this (so long as they pass peer review) and to include it in your decisions regarding your drug use.

Totally agree. It's disbelieving sometimes to see people willing to discount any study that manages to correlate the use of E with some form of memory loss, claiming the studies are flawed, samples not big enough, biased, etc etc.
Then when a questionable study comes out showing E causes no real significant damage you often see these same people jumping on the bandwagon now justified in refusing to believe its anything but media propaganda that says E use can be harmful.

Spot on.

I'm still not convinced that n=81 is an adequate sample size or that 10 instances of MDMA ingestion would cause memory deterioration. But hey, that's why I'm in qual research (read: suck at statistics).

I also think a number of the points made to support the validity of this type of research have been good ones. However I think that caution still needs to be exercised.

every piece of research should be taken seriously.

Even Ricaurte? ;)

Hrrmmm you know from personal experience I'd say that I am quite decided that Ecstasy, not to be too readily confused with MDMA ;) has had some effect on my memory. This is something I noticed when I first began using Ecstasy.

However I've been able to conclude that as an adult responsible for my own consciousness it was a side effect I was personally prepared to accept.

I found that when i first started taking MDMA, there was a drop in my memory abilities, but I also found that it has not become noticably any worse after that frist degradation.

i disagree with their comments about cannabis and ecstasy creating a 'double whammy' on your short and long term memory. they are a bit manipulative in this respect, making it sound like your wiping out all your cognitive capacity by using this duo of drugs.

whatever ecstasy does to your memory, it dont change the fact that cannabis doesnt PERMANENTLY affect your short term memory, it only affects you during periods of frequent use. this part of the study really irks me as its clearly unrelated to the main point of the study and is probably thrown in just to up the 'scare factor'

YOU WILL GO INSANE !!!!!!!!! 8(

"Maybe the study has proven that people with memory problems are more likely to use MDMA? "
Lol...is that because after the first time they used it they forgot it made them lose their memory and tried it again...?
apologies for off topicness

its called the Swiss cheese effect. Well named by me and my mates. Apparently an image brain scan was taken of someone who had taken pills for a while. the image came up with holes where the cells had died. this may not be helping in memory loss but i really wouldnt want a swiss cheese brain. im a sub user, once in a while sorta person and i know thats not helping either. although maybe its the medication as well. either way they can't say for sure.

Sorry Inattentive, but you've been misled. Ecstasy does not put "holes in your brain". The campaign this myth came from an MTV special. The "holes" were simply areas of lower blood flow, as could be seen in any normal person's brain.
