A good read here...bit of a laugh at time but still worth reading.

It would be good if we can have as many people reply as possible.

The latest statistics on drug seizures show last year police seized record levels of "other and unknown" drugs.

That includes steroids, hallucinogens, anaesthetics, pharmaceuticals that are being illegally traded, and other drugs that were not analysed.

According to the 2008-09 Illicit Drug Data Report, the weight of "other and unknown" drugs seized increased nearly 1800 per cent from the year before to 5311kg, making up 40 per cent of the total weight of drugs seized.

A crop of new amphetamine-type drugs with lengthy chemical names also appeared, the common names of which included Window Panes, Edens and Nexus.

University of South Australia drugs expert Professor Jason White, who is the head of UniSA's School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, said when ecstasy supplies fluctuate, manufacturers experiment with new recipes to meet consumer demand.

"When there's a lot of ecstasy around, there's not a lot of demand for these things; but when it's less available - as it appears to be now - you get more alternatives appearing," he said, adding the blends were often passed off as ecstasy or other drugs.

"The effects aren't always easily predictable ... you get mixtures occurring in tablets so it's really quite unpredictable what's going to happen (when you take them). I think it's people's willingness to try a variety of things, and using other drugs that may be pharmaceuticals that have been diverted, or trying a bigger range of drugs than they have previously."

Ecstasy users who participate in online forums have been bemoaning the shortage of ecstasy and comparing the other drugs being sold in its place.

Many of these drugs cause nasty and dangerous side effects such as sweating, shaking, hallucinations and convulsions.

Releasing the drugs report this week, Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor said it gave a snapshot of drug trends that helped "combat the devastating health, social and economic effects of drug use in Australia".

"Once we know the where, when and who of drug use in Australia, we can keep drugs off our streets and ensure fewer young Australian lives are lost to the scourge of illicit drug use," he said.

When asked what would help minimise harm from drugs, Professor White said education was needed to make users more aware of the dangers.

yeh the drug war is working now we have young teens trying 'unknown' xtc like chems. The gov will say that its the evil drug pushers fault tho...

Yeah I agree..... and I am all for becoming more active in the fight to re-educate the masses. If they say Education is the key then we need to show the common society the benefits of having clean pure mdma.

We need to get rid of the stigma that Ecstacy carries for a start, its a shame that most people beleive what they read.

i am very happy to see the support backing up this topic.
keep it up guys. keep flooding it with pro mdma messages..... jeeze i miss it.. if only i was born a couple of years earlier, i woulda experienced the best of mdma, still happy i atleast got to try it.
mdma did run adelaides night life, now its a dizmal place at night

That article seems much more valid and reasonable than most drug-related articles I read from here, I'm surprised. The drugs expert basically says what we on bl all know, that it is more dangerous when mdma is in short supply. It's good to hear this sort of thing but unfortunately the reality is that it won't make a difference to policy or general public perceptions :\

It's articles like these that SLOWLY turn the tide. The more people that read these may do more research and realise that a lot of the illegal drugs around are not as bad as governments want us to believe. Distrust in government's bullshit and swinging voters lead to paradigm shifts in political thinking.

I'm optimistic that in the not to distant future reformed drug policy will be high on the agenda of the major political parties and minor political parties that take up drug reform policy early on will be the winners in marginal seats and the senate.
