THE suspension of a Gold Coast police officer is believed to be linked to Crime and Misconduct Commission concerns that some officers have become 'too close' to the Surfers Paradise nightclub and drug scene.
A 27-year-old constable was suspended from duty yesterday afternoon pending the outcome of a CMC investigation, codenamed operation TESCO, into alleged police misconduct on the Coast.
It is understood the CMC investigation has been running for several months and stems from a large cocaine bust.
A Bulletin source yesterday alleged drug deals had occurred in Surfers Paradise nightclubs in front of some off-duty officers.
On Sunday, officers from the CMC and Queensland Police Ethical Standards Command raided a number of premises across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, including the Surfers Paradise and Burleigh police stations.
The CMC said relevant documents were seized during the searches.
At the time, police sources said the raids were in relation to a night out in Fortitude Valley when an off-duty Surfers Paradise constable was with people who were caught with a 'small amount of drugs'.
However yesterday other sources said the investigation ran 'much deeper' than that.
"It's not just about a few pills in someone's pocket in The Valley," said one.
"The investigation has uncovered a number of links with young cops and the nightclub scene," he said.
"The lines have been crossed numerous times."
The Bulletin tried to put the allegations in writing to Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson but was told by police media not to bother because he would not be making a comment about the investigation.
Police Minister Neil Roberts also refused to comment as it was an 'ongoing investigation'.
Director of CMC Misconduct Investigations, Russell Pearce, said speculation that criminal proceedings were imminent was 'ill-founded'.
"The activities undertaken on Sunday were part of an investigation that is likely to be continued for some time," said Mr Pearce.
"The evidence gathered yesterday will be assessed as part of an ongoing police misconduct investigation that, until yesterday, was being progressed by the CMC in a covert manner.
"A police officer has been suspended on the basis of evidence discovered on Sunday morning, but no consideration has yet been given to bringing any criminal charges."
