GET HIGH: Doctors are warning people against using Hummer energy pills. Picture: Theo Fakos

DOCTORS are warning of the dangers of a new line of party drugs being hyped as "legal ecstasy".

The Australian distributor of the drugs, Mark Reed, said they were gaining enormous popularity on the social scene.

The drugs contain herbal and caffeine extracts that are supposed to give users a non-addictive, speed-like kick.

Created by New Zealand company Lightyears, the pills can be bought online or from the Fremantle Markets.

One called Diablo is supposed to offer an ``elevated sensory, tingly, euphoric high''. Others called Librex and Hummers are supposed to cause andrenalin rushes and increase sex drive. The drugs can cost up to $120 for a pack of 20.

A Facebook group dedicated to promoting the party pills in WA says they offer ``a safer way to explore your inner-space''.

But one group member said they left her boyfriend in an amphetamine-like state.

``My partner had two Diablos and was rocking, chewing his bottom lip like he was on speed and very hyped,'' she said.

A 24-year-old Perth woman told The Sunday Times that people were touting the drugs as ``legal ecstasy''. She said after taking a Diablo she was left extremely dehydrated.

National Drug Research Institute president Steve Allsop was concerned the drugs could easily end up in the hands of children.

Dr Allsop warned also that the effect of the drugs had not been properly researched.

``We know nothing about the risks of taking these tablets,'' he said. ``Just because they are supposed to be organic doesn't mean they are completely safe.''

Public Health Association national president Mike Daube said any suggested impact of the pills was pure speculation. Mr Daube feared they could lead people to start using harder drugs.

But Mr Reed said the party pills were a safe alternative to illicit drugs.

``The whole idea is that you're not putting poison into your body,'' Mr Reed said. ``Everything that is in them has been cleared and comes under the supplements list. They are cheaper and smarter than illicit drugs.''

Mr Reed said there were a number of strict conditions that customers were expected to meet, including being over 18.

Two journalists from The Sunday Times tried a Hummer tablet. Here's what they thought:

Anthony DeCeglie

Age: 23 Weight: 82kg

``The feeling is similar to having one too many coffees or taking a No-Doz tablet.

I mixed it with a few beers and got a little jittery, but comparisons to ecstasy or speed would be an exaggeration.

It causes dehydration. I think people could easily go from taking these pills to trying something heavier for a greater kick.

People might also feel that because they are legal they can't do any harm, and might take a few more than they should to get a more intense hit.''

Raquel DeBrito

Age: 27 Weight: 50kg

``I think the best way to describe it is that it gives you a real buzz. I think it is a lot stronger than having a few Red Bulls.

I started feeling normal after about two hours, but was wide awake and struggled to sleep.

My main concern with it would be dehydration. Another concern is you tend to let your guard down. For example, if I had a few drinks, there is no way I would get behind the wheel. Because these are legal, I felt there was nothing wrong with driving, even though they recommend you don't drive.''

haha. I know Mr Reed, on quite a personal basis.

I still haven't tried them. Prefer to keep to my illicits.

Amusing article though.

All those herbal highs are trash. You'll get more of a buzz washing down a nodoz with a red bull.

"It causes dehydration. I think people could easily go from taking these pills to trying something heavier for a greater kick."

In my experience it was hmm, illegal drugs are great, I wonder if there's anything good thats cheap and legal.

"People might also feel that because they are legal they can't do any harm''

You obviously thought it wouldn't be too harmful if you were willing to try it.
Try 125mg of MDMA and write a truthful article on that.

'Woman Tries Ecstasy, Has the Most Amazing Night of Her Life, Develops a New Appreciation for Music, Lowers Emotional Barriers and Bonds with Friends and Strangers' doesn't do much to sell papers though :|

I have never tried any of this legal high bullshit and have always assumed they would be total crap.

Articles like this are funny to me because nothing is good enough for these anti drug people. If its illegal then they go on about how you don't know whats in it and list a bunch of sinister sounding "ingredients" and ramble on about lack of quality control and profiteering gangsters not caring about the safety of the consumer.

Then you get legal pills like this and that isn't good enough either, they are quality controlled and aren't made in anyones bathtub, they are not powerful or popular enough for the Government to have intervened and banned their use. But now dehydration is an issue, it encourages people to take illegal drugs and driving is a risk.

They haven't banned alcohol because driving is a risk on it and these pills even say not to drive on the label. Don't they realise that alcohol causes dehydration? If these pills encourage people to take drugs I don't see how it would be any less the case with alcohol or cigarettes.

I don't even advocate this crap, in my mind real drugs should be legal and people should have freedom to put what they choose in their bodies. You would never hear of shit like this if you could just go buy pure MDMA, MDA, meth, amphetamine sulphlate, cocaine, etc.

It doesn't matter what it is, if its a drug that isn't alcohol or a pharmaceutical (because we all know how great they are for you right) they will spread shit about it and try cause problems.

for those who think that all of these new breed of pills are crap onbviously haven't tried the right ones - yes there are still a number of them that really are a complete waste of time however i dont call a 12hour long experience with hallucinations, euphoria and head fuck from just half of one pill anything near the likes of redbull +nodoz (this particular one was taken off the shelf last week)

And they are anything but herbal and be wary of the "NO BZP" sign.....recent UK lab results indentified two brands containing BZP - these were also available in australia until a few weeks ago!

and for those who are crying over the dehydration factor - drink some bloody water!

(one more) there is no claim of them being 'safe' but rather 'safer' than street gear

The other major issue is ingrediants. I mean with street drugs you at least have a rough idea of what's in them if you're careful, whereas this legal shit could quite literally contain absolutely anything. Why they aren't forced to list the exact ingrediants and doseages I don't know.

really? at least with legals there is some level of consumer protection from the likes of TPA etc

i think you may find that all those marketed for human consumption do have ingrediants listed (loosley listed I agree) while those sold for non human consumption do not list anything...(who the hell goes online to buy food for their plant anyway ;) )

(who the hell goes online to buy food for their plant anyway )

haha.

No but I mean, you go into a headshop and look at the 'legal highs' available there, they'll maybe say 'contains X, Y and Z!' but make no mention of doseage, or of other unmentioned ingrediants which I'm sure are present in many of them.

RC's are a whole other question but again, I'd feel more confident on the contents of a bag of * ordered online than I would on the contents of a random pill bought in a club at 1am.

legal highs are nice to try ... but nothing will compare to propper mdma pills or coke ... the best you can hope for is a watered down version of mdma, shorter lasting and less euphoria... still idiots will buy them ... and assholes will sell them as the real deal to unsuspecting inocent drugseakers at a 300% markup...

never going to try anything branded as herbal/ legal/ safe XTC.

I think they're a mix of some sort of cathinone drug plus something that lasts a long time. Being dangerous for the heart to whoever has tried them. Desoxy maybe?
