A 12-year-old girl has been suspended from her Darwin primary school for bring amphetamines to class.
Moulden Park school principal Tony Otway said he never heard in his seven years as principal of hard drugs being found in a primary school classroom. "It's a total shock and not something that one would expect, particularly in a primary school," Mr Otway told ABC radio today.
The year six student was suspended for a week last month.
"The suspension was a short, sharp reminder of what was acceptable in school and (she) is currently a model student," Mr Otway said.
She was also questioned by the school-based constable Neil Galloway but charges have not yet been laid.
The girl's fellow students raised the alarm with teachers.
She had a small quantity of amphetamine powder in a plastic satchel in her school bag.
Mr Otway said he was proud of the students for reporting the drugs and praised his school's drug awareness program.

Show and tell has certainly changed since I was in primary school :)

She should have just told the teacher it was her ADD medication ;)

babydoc - The NT have what they call "school based policing". It's pretty straight foward... There's some information on it here :)
Maybe I'm old and weary, but this doesn't strike me as cause for humour... A 12 year old primary school student does not have the judgement required to make an educated decision on drug use. Such judgement comes only with age & experience. IMHO, It's a good thing she got caught now. Imagine another event like this - 10 yr old in Ecstasy Overdose 16/07/2002

All jokes aside, and probably in bad taste, a 12 year old girl is very unlikely to have developed enough mentally to handle the strain such drugs can put a brain under. A young person is at far greater risk of dependance through excessive use as they are probably not as aware of the harm they are causing to themself and probably haven't developed much self control. Drugs can be dangerous to anyone but the effect drugs could have on somebody who has barely started puberty and whose body and mind is just starting to develop are possibly devastating.

heaps of schools have police officers
not just derro schools either
nice schools have drug problems and bad students too
