^ yeh from what I can gather our customs is one of the better ones in the world; not an easy job given the size of our coastline either.

Off-topic slightly, I wonder how the exorbitant prices of certain high-addiction drugs like meth/heroin/coke etc in Australia affects the associated crime rate? That is, could we have a higher rate of say break & enters, drug-related violent crime etc because the street value of these drugs is so much higher than elsewhere in the world? I guess it'd be easiest to compare Australia with the USA where the mentioned drugs are a fraction of the price, but you'd have to think about other socio-economic factors too....

Well we are at record numbers regarding unemployment. We have a lot of pharmacy robberies which is a new thing. High or low price a junkie needs his fix. Most functional become unfunctional eventually so a lot of crime for drug money is common. But with the unemployment situation even those that worked and used legit money to buy drugs are out of work so I am sure that plays a role too. We have a lot of crime in the states. Most drug related.

shit alot of drugs have been smashing our shores lately, the recent bust of coke nd now this heroine.
atleast the decent netherland pills got thru, maybe australian customs like the population full of love, in all honesty who wouldnt :) long live mdma. i love you

Some of the 'heroin suburbs' in Melbourne, have bigger security bars than your average prison. I think that says a lot about the crime rates associated with this drug...

Living in one of them can be scary, to be honest I'd like to think I'm open minded when it comes to drugs but most the 'junkies' in my area scare me away from heroin. I just hope this siezure isn't going to make them worse considering that the price will sure as hell rise :(

Same out comes here... only different system. The plebs all think their votes count here as well. So in that respect its similar (waits for defensive "Hey my vote does count!" remarks..)

And its always getting worse :-)

haha, but my greens did get the melbourne seat did they not ;)
Not that it ultimately made all that much difference, but I do believe the rest of the country will vote more for minor parties throughout our life time.

Secular Party for government 2056 you heard it hear first haha

This aint no cartel bust, this is mum and son with stars in their eyes... prob the reason why they got done... thought they wouldn't have to pay anyone off!

168kg worth 400 million? Not in the states. It's worth alot but not close to that.

on the news customs were saying that it was pure heroin. can be cut 4 times to get to street quality. so thats where they get inflated price cos they put it as over 400 kg.

may be mother and son, but to purchase and be able to organise them to be hidden in doors and shipped over, these were not just mother and son organisation.
H seems to be on a bit of a resurgance again here... hop it doesnt get the the same scale as i remember in the late 90s when H was so easy to get, liturally had to just hop of train at one certain south western sydney train station..

Haha...

Silly customs officers. I had one demand i take my passport out of my mouth the other day on re-entry in to aus...

I changed lines and told him where to stick it. Bloody power trippers.. It was in my mouth for like 2 seconds while i rifled through my bag looking for my boarding pass.

not as bad as being detained and haveing the swat team and the whole police force in the airport single you out infront of everyone just because when they exrayed my bag they seen what looked like a gun and even though they opend it to find out it was a small belt buckle, they treated me like total shit infront of everyone .
It was so embarassing.
And beyond that i asked if i could still keep it and they said no i asked even if my mother could come pick it up to send it to me and they said no so i said i guess you guys can just collect this type of shit and keep it for yerselves and they said yup.
I meen cmon it was like 3 inches long .
they would have let it threw if it was in one of my bigger bags .
It was in my pill bag i carry everywhere and never thought i thing of it.
But it held sentamental value as i gave it to my stepdad that had died and my mother thought it would be nice if i was to have it back.
havent flown since.
And wrote one nastly letter to air canada president .
Did no good but at least i vented on someone...
airports are rediculous now..

Seems like there have been a few big busts lately. I can't imagine this making any difference in availability or price though, I remember the last multi million bust a few months back didn't seem to change a thing. It really does indicate how much must be getting through if seizing hundreds of kilos of the shit doesn't even make a dent in availability.

And drugs are more expensive here but it's not as significant a difference when you consider the relatively higher incomes of Australians. Our minimum wage is 3 times that of the USA.

QFT, wages in the US are absolutely abysmal. i was a personal trainer at the biggest gym in NYC, and practically a manager at a climbing store as well, i was getting 9 an hour at both jobs, and my mates were jealous because thats was actually pretty good.

work at an outdoors store in melbourne, same job basically, and i'm getting minimum 22 an hour.

with the dollar on virtual parity it makes a verrrrry big difference.....

thats all provided you actually can get a job in the states, and from what i hear these days it's pretty well near impossible....

A huge reason for that is because there is so many francise's and super stores in the U.S.
Meaning they require less jobs for the same amount of work done, and the rich get richer whilst the poor struggle to make ends meat. Same thing is happening here, but it's a long process the longer we can support the little stores the better ;)

@Bud.lightyear
Whats the dole situation in the u.s.a? is it easy to get? is it a reasonable amount, what do people do if they're not eligable?

Wow, minumum wage is $22 an hour? There are Americans that think we should have a higher minimum wage to get people out of poverty but the other side says it will be bad for business. So we put the interests of the business ahead of the needs of the people. Capitalism at it's finest.

The min wage in Aus is $15 I think, but what bud.lightyear was saying is that even in relatively unskilled jobs the pay is often a lot higher, even working in a bar the base pay is about $18/hr, plus tips.

dole is pretty much non existent as far as i kno. being a student is nothing. no hecs either, so your fees are up front and at many (most all good schools) those fees can be 40k a year. no hecs, no youth allowance, crap wages. i personally dont know anyone who's put themselves through school, god forbid facing financial loans of that much when you're 18!

if someone's reading this from the states maybe they can elaborate more, but as far as i kno the dole is so hard to get, and so little, it isn't worth the time and hassle. better to collect cans....

I am pretty sure they have nothing over there. I am curious about sickness pensions and the like though, is there anything like that available in the States?
