Newly nauseous on oxycontin/codone

I have been on 30 mg oxycontin 2X a day for a couple of years, with 5 mg oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I had never had issue with being nauseous or vomiting but for the last few months it's hitting pretty bad.

I can no longer take vocodin due to liver issues and the fentynal patch wasn't sticking to me very well due to the sweating.

Is there something I can try to keep the sick feeling away? I hate to ask my dr to change me again. Went through MS contin, the fentynal patch then finally these in a short amount of time. I finally get relief from the pain, but not enjoying the vomiting so much.

this happened to me. i used to never get sick on opiates. ever. then i took a 2 month break and now i can't even take 10mg of hydrocodone without feeling sick and 95% of the time vomiting. i would suggest some dramamine or food 10-30 minutes before taking your dose. a not always popular one is if it's getting to bad ask your doctor to prescribe you some promethazine (i used to take that along with my suboxone) or some kind of anti-nausea medication.

I'm going to move your post to Basic Drug Discussion as I think it best fits there. BDD mods, feel free to do with it as you will.

There are really a lot of options for nausea induced by opioids (a fairly common side effect) including antihistamines (which may also potentiate or "magnify" the effect of the drug) or prescription anti-emetics such as ondansetron (trade name Zofran.) I'd recommend talking to your doctor about the nausea and seeing if he/she thinks an adjunct medication to control nausea is appropriate.

As dokomo has said, try Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) as an OTC solution to nausea, if that doesn't work the doc can prescribe something like ondansetron (which I hear is pretty powerful stuff). It's kind of weird that you'd just start experiencing nausea now, but it happens. Hopefully it will go away once your tolerance builds up a bit more.

To the OP: Don't feel too bad about your situation, I've been on just about every opiate you can imagine at some point over the past 3 and a half years from a back injury. Needless to say, I have a massive tolerance and this same situation happened to me a couple months ago with my Hydrocodone 10mg prescription, I swore something was wrong with the pills and even made the pharmacy redo the script and it still made me sick to my stomach and dysphoric all day. Just one of those weird things with opiates, but anyway, I finally got some relief from eating a high carb meal about an hour before taking a dose and then a small sugary snack immediately following the dose. This is just what worked for me, and I hope you find a technique that works for you, good luck. ;)

As others have said, there are a wealth of anti-emetics (anti-nausea) drugs that your doctor could prescribe you - I am sure you can find one that helps :)

Loads of good advice in this thread, my top tip for nausea is ginger :) fresh or crystalised is best, but a ginger tea is easier (i <3 lemon and ginger..) I was really skeptical but it actually does work :)

Good luck! Nausea is a horrible symptom, and I am sure something can be done to find you a solution <3

Diphenhydramine and other anti-histamines do an amazing job at combating nausea imo. weed also helps and tums/baking soda help as well as potentiate the oxy :)
