I have to say that I just discovered Bluelight and it has opened my eyes. I'm here because my husband was in a serious accident in 2003 and has been on md prescribed oxycotin and oxycodon ever since. Now the md is saying it is time to get off of them to see where the pain from the accident really is and life has really gone to hell. He tried cold turkey and after about 3 days all he could talk about was suicide. Horrible. The md now has him on a taper with valium and clonidine which is suppose to last 6 months, but this isn't much better. He is definitely walking on the dark side now. Any recommendations? Any other spouses/partners out there with some words of wisdom?

Hello, welcome to Bluelight.
I think your husband should stay on opioids. If his pain hasn't subsided why stop the drugs? Have you consider surgery? If you're not happy with your current doctor, get a second opinion from another one.

If you have any question regarding oxycodone, valium or clonidine feel free to start a thread in Other Drugs.

I'm moving this from NMI to The Dark Side, people there are really nice and will help you.

Good luck to both of you :)

Welcome to Bluelight. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's plight (and therefore, your plight, as well). It is such a common story these days. Doctors throw the opiates at you for years without ever talking to you about dependence and addiction and then suddenly stop prescribing them. Then the person taking them is left to not only deal with the WDs/PAWS but is stigmatized for having an addiction!

Here is a thread where lots of folks collective wisdom, questions and experiences on opiate withdrawals can be found: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/569872-The-Opioid-Withdrawal-Megathread-and-FAQ

For emotional support--for either of you--don't hesitate to use this thread to let us know how it is going.<3

Hey terratopia,
Sorry to hear about what you two are going through. I can relate in a few ways, can I ask what kind of pain your husband has? I ask because I came off 10 years of oxy on May 4th cold turkey (and it was hell lol) but I have all kinds of nerve damage and spinal issues from breaking my back and surprisingly my pain is no worse than being on the meds so why the heck have all the side effects and feel drugged tired etc if it's really not helping with pain. You can PM me if you like
