New Zealand votes to legalize euthanasia but not marijuana

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- New Zealanders voted to legalize euthanasia in a binding referendum, but preliminary results released Friday showed they likely would not legalize recreational marijuana use.

With about 83% of votes counted, New Zealanders emphatically endorsed the euthanasia measure with 65% voting in favor and 34% voting against.

The “No” vote on marijuana was much closer, with 53% voting against legalizing the drug for recreational use and 46% voting in favor. That left open a slight chance the measure could still pass once all special votes were counted next week, although it would require a huge swing.

The two referendums represented significant potential changes to New Zealand's social fabric, although the campaigns for each ended up getting overshadowed somewhat by the coronavirus pandemic and a parallel political race, in which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her liberal Labour Party won a second term in a landslide.

In past elections, special votes — which include those cast by overseas voters — have tended to track more liberal than general votes, giving proponents of marijuana legalization some hope the measure could still pass.

That is so criminal. Marijuana can actually save lives.
At least give a fighting chance 👎🏽.
Then again, maybe they should legalize more education. ☹

Reckon the (other) referendum would have passed had there been no pandemic.

How are we STILL DEBATING THIS.

How is it sane that cannabis is illegal but alcohol is condoned and, if anything, encouraged?

Yeah I know preaching to the choir. I'm not even a huge fan of Marijuana myself. But God it's just so stupid.

I always knew cannabis would never pass in New Zealand. Much of the country is still very locked in conservative thinking and dumb as young people never turn out enough to vote. The pandemic did nothing to change the outcome of the vote considering we also didn't have much of a pandemic here anyway and covid been eliminated very early on. The legalization lobby did nothing to help it never campaigned enough just a bunch of dipshit losers who where trying to be the leaders of it to stroke their own ego and thus made more people against it for been the stereotypical loser.

Alot of black market dealers voted no aswell to keep their income source.

Well, I had the same thoughts about why voluntary euthanasia is illegal but abortion (essentially the killing of an unborn child) is not only perfectly legal but is often encouraged.

Fucking weird, huh?

The world has it's priorities all twisted up. I spoken about this to so many, and they all agree there is a problem. They also agree that it's strange that abortion is so easily tolerated yet drug use and voluntary euthanasia are so fucking controversial. No they're not controversial. They should be legalised ASAP because there are a LOT of suffering people here who are not getting help - either with calling it fucking quits or getting the right drugs to make their lives worth living (eg. ADHD needs treatment with stims...but doctors are such arrogant fucks who won't listen to their patients and try the meds to see if they work).

I get a feeling the governments here would rather me hang from the end of a fucking rope than actually get any help.

I've always thought of new Zealand as a saner Australia. Alas...

Check out NZ healthcare. Fucking joke. It's user-pays and it's expensive. I'm not surprised that NZ was so opposed to cannabis reform.

It's the same in UK. But UK has good healthcare, whereas NZ has shitty healthcare from what I was told by an NDIS support worker.

Probably a lot of arrogant fuckfaces live there...hence why they voted against it.

lol There was a time when I actually believed that Australia was a more free and liberal version of the US and wanted to move there.

Right? And... In some ways there's probably truth to that.

But then you have things where it's totally backwards, like how Australia still has virtually not legal Marijuana in any serious way while America has come an enormous distance in even recreational legalization.

America beat Australia in gay marriage too.

lmao. First NZ healthcare is totally free and some of the best in the world. But you can also get health insurance if you want to go the private route for quite cheap in some workplaces. UK healthcare is very bad to compared to NZ. Where i live my ER waits are always under a hour. Get free medications free everything the only thing you ever pay for is a GP Visit.

most kiwis are on meth its suprising how many meth heads hate weed and voted no aswell.

"Most Kiwis"?

Well fuck.

lol There was a time when I actually believed that Australia was a more free and liberal version of the US and wanted to move there.

We have a joke 'round these parts that Australia is the US of the southern hemisphere.

The inverse of that was that NZ is the Canada of the southern hemisphere. We thought wrong.

Well, there goes that CANZUK idea...if only the C of the thing is cool with a stupid weed I don't see how this could work.

I was told differently by my support worker...but maybe it's because she was not a NZ citizen.

Here's the final vote tally for the referendum. I still think they were insane to reject (or poorly informed):

I mean, I don't want to get into a dick-measuring contest, because I think NZ's healthcare system is great. But paying to see a GP is a bad idea if it discourages people from visiting the GP (which studies have shown it can do).

I don't agree with euthanasia based on what it relies on, but I'd vote for it since I realize it's an answer for people who do agree with it and may even need access to it. It seems like a medical necessity to me

I don't know why marijuana is illegal. If I had to guess I'd say that it has to do with police forces in certain countries losing money over it. When I lived in Canada the cops never bothered me and I rarely saw any even at odd hours, but they're like an epidemic here and you can't avoid them
