It is. Always..
I feel the same about the avatars, although I guess it is kind of interesting to see what people do with them. It took me forever just to find a satisfying start-point avatar, but I think what I came up with is kinda cool.
A bit "Nintendo-ish" though, I have to say.. the whole intro video that played, the avatars, their expressions, and the sounds along with it all, all remind me of Mario, and other "cute" Nintendo characters.
I did find that it made things more seamless. Before, my xbox was studdering on loading the friends list, and whatnot.. and now not so much, it seems.
The top thing so far with it that I like is the 8-person party. It makes certain games, like Far Cry 2, that don't have party systems, much easier to play with friends on. In Farcry 2 before this update, we had to send a message out to all the friends we wanted to join our match, describing what to look for- regarding game-type and map. It would kick you (non-hosting players) out of the match at the end of each one, and it still does, but it's easier just hearing the host say what map it's on now.
For Bad Company I imagine it is making a lot of people happy, since before there were only four-man squads... Now 8 people can all coordinate.
