New Wave

I'm a black rainbow, and I'm an ape of God
I've got a face that's made for violence upon
And I'm a teen distortion, survived abortion
A rebel from the waist down

I wanna thank you Mom, I wanna thank you Dad
For bringing this fucking world to a bitter end
I never really hated the one true God
But the God of the people I hated

You said you wanted evolution
The ape was a great big hit
You say you want a revolution man
And I say that you're full of shit

We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable

You said you wanted evolution
The ape was a great big hit
You say you want a revolution, man
And I say that you're full of shit

The more that you fear us, the bigger we get
The more that you fear us, the bigger we get
And don't be surprised, don't be surprised
Don't be surprised when we destroy all of it

Songwriters: Brian Hugh Warner / John Lowery / Jeordie White

This song addresses Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. The song's title is from a quote by John Lennon's murderer, Mark David Chapman, who once lamented that he "felt like a nobody."

Today I'm dirty, I want to be pretty
Tomorrow, I know I'm just dirt
Today I'm dirty, I want to be pretty
Tomorrow, I know I'm just dirt

We're the nobodies, wanna be somebodies
When we're dead, they'll know just who we are
We're the nobodies, wanna be somebodies
When we're dead, they'll know just who we are

Yesterday I was dirty, wanted to be pretty
I know now that I'm forever dirt
Yesterday I was dirty, wanted to be pretty
I know now that I'm forever dirt

We're the nobodies, wanna be somebodies
When we're dead, they'll know just who we are
We're the nobodies, wanna be somebodies
When we're dead, they'll know just who we are

Some children died the other day
We fed machines and then we prayed
Puked up and down in morbid faith
You should have seen the ratings that day

Some children died the other day
We fed machines and then we prayed
Puked up and down in morbid faith
You should have seen the ratings that day

[2005 Against All Gods mix:]
I don't know love, I never cared to and I'm not sure if I ever will
I'm a student of hate; I know now that god is a medium
Whatever I expected to save me from this life is no longer the one I can hate
It is the people that made me; it is the people I wanted so much to be
I may only find love in their destruction

--Brian Hugh Warner

5:00am on the bathroom floor from the night before
Do you find me dreadful?
What a shame, such a sad disgrace, such a pretty face
But she's not regretful

Am I beautiful?
Am I usable?

It's killing time again
Put on your face and let's pretend
These killing lights won't kill us all again
3:00am on the city street, when the air is sweet
I've had my mouth full
But it seems that outside the screen such a pretty face
Often will look dreadful

Am I beautiful?
Am I usable?

It's killing time again
Put on your face and let's pretend
These killing lights won't kill us all again
It's killing time again
Cover your face and we'll pretend
These killing lights can't kill us all again
You see they always remember
They never forget a face
When they cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut you up
Cut, cut, cut, cut, they remember
Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut you up
Cut you up

It's killing time again
Put on your face and let's pretend
These killing lights won't kill us all again
It's killing time again
Cover your face and we'll pretend
These killing lights can't kill us all again

I've got a question: Is new wave a style of music that is linked to the scene that formed it/the time/the place or is it a sound? IE would a band that sounds exactly like the talking heads be considered new wave these days if they debuted today?

Umm.. Good question. I did hear something released recently that sounded just like Talking Heads (and it was so obvious lots of ppl were commenting on it). It might've been Pearl Jam or even Puscifer (Maynard from Tool). Neither of those you'd consider New Wave. So I'd say primarily the scene/time/place.

But then I throw things in here like AFI who have got new stuff out but they have that synthesiser thing going on.. And I can't think where else to put them! It's a pretty broad category. So when in doubt call it New Wave 😁

I've always heard New Wave was a term given by the manager of the Talking Heads ie the new wave of punk which gives me some question if new wave should be more specific to the music coming out of the cbgbs around that time and like post punk or something describes the sound.

I don't know.. I started the thread not bc I'm an expert but bc I was a teenager in the 80s and liked more than just Top 40 stuff.

New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock including punk itself. Later, critical consensus favored "new wave" as an umbrella term involving many popular music styles of the era, including power pop, synth-pop, ska revival, and more specific forms of punk rock that were less abrasive. It may also be viewed as a more accessible counterpart of post-punk.

Common characteristics of new wave music include a humorous or quirky pop approach, the use of electronic sounds, and a distinctive visual style in music videos and fashion. In the early 1980s, virtually every new pop/rock act – and particularly those that employed synthesizers – were tagged as "new wave". Although new wave shares punk's do-it-yourself philosophy, the artists were more influenced by the lighter strains of 1960s pop and were opposed to the generally abrasive, political bents of punk rock, as well as what was considered to be creatively stagnant "corporate rock".

I consider Depeche Mode to be the Kings of New Wave but that's very debatable.

The Talking Heads-like song was Pearl Jam in 2020:
