I think that rather than guaranteeing any sort of freedom from government tyranny, the prevalence of guns in the us actually works in the favour of consevative elites by sowing fear, division, hatred and selfish individualism (not to mention crime) - and this is exactly why it is promoted by the elites.
The whole history of america, since back before the constitution has been one of conscious manipulation of the people with fear to prevent threat of popular power to the elite - early on, the elite realised it was better to court and arm the small farmers as a bulwark between them and the blacks, indians and poor white people - the whole bollocks about rights was to win enough of the lower orders to their side (and the fine print shows just how much rights there actually were in there (ie fuck all for most people))
(i'm biased by currently reading Howard Zinn's People's History of america which has all the gory details (readable online) - i reckon all british and american (and spanish etc) people should read the first chapter about what we did to the indians)
