I have neck issues and it flares up from time to time. Lately is been almost everyday. I can not take hydrocodone because it makes me vomit. I have been trying to just use aspirin and biofreeze..but im dying here!

A friend of mine gave me a few of her 30mg extended release morphine pills. I have never taken, nor been put on morphine. Im naturally paranoid in nature so im worried that it could kill me, or possibly be too high of a dose, make me sick etc...

Is this a pretty high dose for someone to start out on? Could this dose be anywhere close to fatal? Does morphine make people generally sick?

Im just in so much pain I cant stand living like this, but im freaked to take this particular pain med because I have no experience with it. Any help would be so much appreciated!

Thank you

Going off what info you've given me to work with here, I'm guessing you have a minimal tolerance to opiates. While 30mg of morphine isn't enough to kill you, it may make you nauseous at the very least. These are timed release morphine pills though, so the side effects are considerably diminished for some people.

Opiate nausea is a pretty common side effect, especially when you have a low tolerance. It's countered by a variety of things. I've always found simply laying down and letting it pass was the most effective solution. If I had to throw up, so be it. I always felt much better after vomiting anyway and could appreciate the analgesia much more.

Some use ginger to counter-act it as well. Word has it this is pretty effective, and might do you some good. It's worth a shot.

You could of course always split the pill in half and see where that gets you, or even into quarters if you're feeling especially cautious. Either way as long as you start low and work your way up slowly, you should be just fine.

Like I said, it is not anywhere near enough morphine to kill you. Puke? Maybe. I can't really tell you exactly how it's going to effect you, but it most likely won't be any worse than what you're already currently going through.

If hydrocodone is making you nauseated & you're vomiting, morphine could make it worse. Hydrocodone 10 years ago use to make me really nauseated & dizzy so I stopped using all pain meds except for darvocet for my back pain. However 10 years later, hydrocodone is awesome & works great for pain & so does morphine. If I would have used morphine 10 years ago, I know I wouldnt have liked it at all.

What you should do is cut the 30mg in half & take 15mgs of the morphine & see where you are about an hour afterwards.

well 30 mg is only the second to lowest dose so and it's time released so its a perfect dosage, but you will probably feel mild nausea, and feel kinda hot, i like valiums they are good anxiety/muscle relaxer pills

The dose is especially not high. I took 30mg of morphine with near zero tolerance and it had almost no effect, mostly because of its horrid bio availability.

Overall you should be fine. Maybe about 2-6 hours in you may get sick but otherwise I wouldn't fret too much. BA is ~10-15%. Maybe hop on down to your local drugstore and get some anti-nausea meds. I used to take those when I was on MS Contin because somedays I would need more than other days for my pain and if I went over 120 mgs in 12 hours I would get sick. It helped a bit for me. Ginger ale is nice too. Good luck and I hope your pain comes down.

Xtriss,

I have bad discs in my low back and neck. I take an average anywhere from 120mg - 150mg of Oxycodone per day at 30mg per dose. I also use a small portable TENS unit and an inversion table for my low back. (You may have seen them on TV adds the last couple of years...Teeters Hangups.) Then for my neck I use a microwave heat wrap. It's full of beads and gets moist in the microwave.

I don't know what type of pain you have in your neck...maybe I missed it? Mine is stiff, can't turn my neck like the vertebras are locked up, as I'm trying to turn my neck pressure will build up and "POP," HEADACAHS that start in my neck and POUND through my head like a metal rod trying to push my eyeball out of the socket!!! It's usually on one side or the other, but sometimes it can be my whole head. Hurts so bad that a bullet in my neck sounds pretty good at times! If it was like this all of the time, I would put a bullet there, or take my full 30 days script of the Oxycodone all at once!!! Right now I'm trying to get clearance from the workers comp insurance to get injections in my neck...after that I guess surgery.

Anyway, if your neck/head feels like mine, try a TENS unit and moist heat wrap. If I had to choose over having only the Oxycodone or the TENS unit, I would choose the TENS. Not only does it help kill the pain, but if it's set on high it will help to straighten out my neck so the nerves aren't getting pinched.

Thank you all very much for your responses! You dont know how much I appreciate them.

I am worried about feeling sick on them so I will go get some anti nausea meds and give them a try if I do in fact get sick. I have found that I only get sick from anything with "hydrocodone" in it. I think maybe im allergic to it? Vicodin, lortab..etc. So im hoping the morphine will be different.

I thought about cutting them in 1/2 but I read NOT to do that with the extended release kind.

Im still in pain today so I think I will head to the store and get the nausea meds and hopefully wont need them. Should I eat prior to taking it?

Thanks

Hi Xtriss, welcome to BDD!

Glad you've got some helpful advice and I'm sorry you are in so much pain.

Some extended release pills shouldn't be cut in half, some are okay. It's probably going to speed up the absorption a bit, as it will increase the surface area:volume ratio, but not by a huge amount. If you take a look at the opioid conversion table in my signature you can see that 30mg oral morphine really isn't a very big dose at all, and you can compare it to your hydrocodone doses. However, some people are just very sensitive to opioids. Hopefully that's not the case with you, but it is good to be careful :)

Eating will slow the absorption. Some find having food in their stomachs increases nausea, some find it decreases it. I'd probably go for an empty stomach myself, but YMMV.

Finally, I really recommend going to see a doctor if you are in this much pain! It sounds horrible, and you should probably get it checked over and a prescription of your own..

It would be heavenly if I could afford to go to the Dr. I am without insurance. A visit alone to the Dr is over $100, then you add in the Xray, CT scan or MRI so the Dr can see what maybe going on. Then the cost of the perscription. I dont have that kind of money. But in a ideal world I would much rather go to the Dr and see what is going on and get medication that is right for me and will help me. Who wouldnt? So if that was an option I would have taken it. I really hope sometime in the near future to have health insurance and possibly with my current job I will be eligible soon.

Again thank you all for your responses. Im just looking for some relief in the mean time.

Thanks

Ice and heat then. Also some nice massages for your neck would be nice too. Not a deep tissue, just something to relax your neck muscles and work out any kinks that may be in there. If you have a significant other then that would be of great benefit to you in the pocketbook area. And while thats going on, keep them informed if they hit a spot that is more tender than another spot. If you have any bulged/slipped discs, then your going to want that area to be "worked into." Meaning the person giving the massage should not directly attack the area that hurts, but rather work around it in and then slowly into it(something I learned from my physical trainer). Also a thing to look at that may help you would be some Biofreeze and a good dose of 4-800 mg of an NSAID like naproxen or ibuprofen.

If it is getting so bad that its disrupting your life, maybe a trip to your doc would be a good idea. Just tell them that your a bit short on cash and they should be more than happy to work out a payment schedule with you. He may or may not want to do xrays/mri but that could be done at your discretion really. If you are short on cash and they want to do that, tell them that you are and they will probably be ok with waiting and just getting you some pain meds to hold you over for a while until you get more money. If your up front with a doctor, they will work around your circumstances as best they can. And basic pain medications aren't terribly expensive either. Also maybe asking for a muscle relaxer would be good too. One like cyclobenzaprine or methocarbomol.
Take care of yourself and things will fall into place. Chronic pain sufferers can become host to many more problems like depression, anxiety, anger, and other emotional states that are less than healthy for most human beings.

I'm sorry, I'm from the UK and I constantly forget about the money side of things in the states.. :(

Does medicaid not cover things like this, or are you not eligible?

Sorry to derail the thread a little bit, I'm just so horrified that you are in pain and can't go to the doctors, and when you do you can't get the tests you might need :(

I'm sorry if I sounded rude saying go to the doctor - it's just a natural response for me when someone is in so much pain that they need to use a friend's morphine prescription.. morphine plus OTC NASIDs really are your best bet I think, whatever is the strongest you can get over there and taken with APAP, plus everything aveoturbo mentioned, and consider a TENS machine if it is suitable and feasible..

I hope you feel better soon <3

30mg morphine sounds like it would be less than 300mg codeine..

In the opioid conversion chart in my sig it says that 30mg morphine = 200mg codeine, which sounds about right to me.

Take the pills, maybe just one at a time. You may get nausea, but that will pass and it will definitely help with your neck pain.

Great advice from everyone, thought I would add a few things. Watch what you eat, take, and drink. When you have no tolerance to pain meds everything plays a roll in how it will make you feel. I would say try drinking a glass of milk or having something to eat, even if its light wait about 30min then take the pill. Dont drink Grapefruit juice with it or take Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) unless you are trying to make the pill feel stronger and hit harder, and stay away from acid reducers like tums unless you want the effects to last longer. No it wont kill you, but start out slow and feel it out. Good luck I hope it helps your pain.
