ok so this is going to seem like a dumb question, but anyway...

I'm new to the whole EDM scene and I have a couple events coming up. There are some "raves" which are kinda massive outdoor events (or some are indoor in stadiums), and a couple of concerts.

My question is, what kind of dancing do people really do to electronic music? Any examples or places to learn?

Also, do people typically dance much at concerts or these big events. They all seem so packed from the videos, are you really dancing the whole time or what? Do you spend more time talking to people and such?

I've been clubbing a lot (mostly hip hop and stuff), but the experience looks hugely different, so I'm feeling kinda lost. Any advice?

Popular styles: melbourne shuffle, kandi stomp, tecktonik, and liquid. But pretty much just dance however you feel at a rave, you'll be more awkward if you're the only one on the floor not dancing. If it's packed, it's more like everyone jumping to the beat though.

Just grind on all the hot bitches. If they don't want you to grind on them you'll be able to tell by the look on their face.

^^good way to get slapped/stabbed/shot....so bad advice. I have personally punched a few dudes that were walking around the party creepin on every girl there. i hate to throw out PLUR, cause its so overused, but...NOT PLUR!!

TL had it right, no one gives a shit, just move and have a good time. If ur really concerned with ur dancing, just watch what other people are doing, and try and copy the bits that you like. Eventually you'll develop your own style.

u had to punch a few dudes....

u sure your not the one trippin man? Im all for stopping something but that sounds like starting it to me.

^^hey, around here, you got two options...slug or ignore. this is the wild west. thankfully, its only happened a couple times, but this aint a nice safe place to party, especially if youre going to a club. the outdoor events are nicer, cause they arent advertised, only community knows, so not a problem there

Hi SuperM1....welcome to Bluelight.

The best part about what I call the "pure" rave experience is that there is no particular thing to do or way that you need to be. It's about free self expression in an environment where no one will judge you. You can expect people to be dancing anything from carefully choreographed moves to wild, chaotic flailing around. There will be people standing and sitting around and chatting with friends and complete strangers.

For example, the best rave experience that I ever had was at a psychedelic trance rave with perhaps 250 people. I find that the psytrancer crowd is probably the least inhibited and most creative when they dance and just move however it feels good. During that evening there were people sitting around the dancefloor beating on little drums and one guy even had an Australian digeridoo. During the night I saw a homeless man wander in from the street (club was in a sketch part of town) and take off his shirt and start to dance. Later that evening I saw two Asian girls in Catholic school outfits with short skirts shaking their stuff on the dancefloor. The absolute highlight was when a guy wearing a tutu brought out a jump rope and started to jump rope in the middle of the dance floor. The crowd parted and people of all ages from barely legal to grey haired fogies formed a cheering circle around him, and I was in a corner by a speaker and this here 36 year old got this huge grin from ear to ear and thought to himself, "Rave culture is so awesome!"

My best advice to dancing at a rave is to forget about the crowd, let the music take your mind and let your body follow. If you're on E (hopefully), you'll think you're the world's best damn dancer and that you must look amazing and that's all that really counts.

just go with the flow ;), trance is my favorite genre of edm, and i absolutely love dancing to it, my body just flows so well with it

U need to take a trip out east man, i've never been around violence or seen anyone get realll into it while rolling... i could see it just killing ur high maybe?

Either way just move how you want to, theres certain styles but who wants to follow strict dance rules? It will come naturally especially if your rollin' :\

haha well i guess hip hop wise its easier, especially with girls and all. sad note, i did buy a dvd called 'hip hop moves for the club (for guys)'. so that should tell you that 'go with the flow' didnt work so well for me.

i guess whats harder to comprehend is how to dance to trance when its a lot more mellow and slow, and techno which is goes far faster than i can move? anyone have any good youtube examples?

this post seems pitiful as i write it. maybe its because i'm a little more self conscious on mdma as i dont have my inhibitions released as i do with alcohol. is there a way to get a combined effect? i dont want to drink on a roll cause it tends to diminish and make me forget.

it does not matter how you dance. no one cares. just go with the music

THIS! This is why I loved my first rave. You quickly realize no one gives a fuck if you look goofy as long as YOU are having fun! I'm a terrible dancer, I just jump up and down and bounce all over the place :)

Me and my boyfriend go to EDM clubs and events out here in LA every weekend- sometimes twice a week.

The general feel of the "true" or good quality EDM scene is non-judgemental =) I don't do a particular style of dance, I just do a kind of generic, non-distinctive dancing and so do many people. People are usually friendly, and if you go outside or in areas that aren't a dance floor, you can usually stike up a conversation with just about anyone.

You're posting this in the MDMA discussion, so I'm thinking it's a fair guess you'll be rolling- be careful about bringing anything in, as security at EDM clubs and events will typically do a basic pat-down, and ask you to show what's in your pockets. At EDM events I find that anywhere from 20-90% of the crowd is rolling =) EDM events all have a different vibe, since there are a lot of different genres. I preffer electro and hard house, which tends to attract a mix of people because electro is gaining mainstream appeal. Trance and other styles of house tends to attract more ravers and old school ravers. I've only been to one dubstep event, so I can't tell you for sure what they're typically like, but there was a lot of mixing of substances especially ketamine & MDMA and people weren't super outgoing for that reason (< I'm NOT saying this is what a dubstep event is like, this was just the one event I went to! =))

It's not going to be a completely different game from general clubbing at a pop or hip hop club- it will likely be less intimidating, because the general vibe is friendlier. People tend to dance a lot, but theres also a lot of sitting, random conversations.

The one thing that you'll notice people never do (in my experience) at EDM events is dance close together and grind like they do at hip hop clubs. Even when I'm by myself on a dancefloor, rolling my ass off with a tinnnny top on and smiling, guys will NEVER just start dancing on me, they might hug me, they might try to start a conversation- but it seems to be universally respected that you let people do their own thing without doing anything that would inhibit them from expressing themselves. If a guy starts skipping or shuffling, people will kindly move out of his way and smile. If someone is getting way too crazy, people usually just ignore that guy =)

I don't know what city you're in, or what genre of EDM you'll be seeing, but I imagine some of the same guidelines apply =) Have fun!

You might want to approach this issue from another angle. Hip Hop and stuff is very different from most forms of EDM. While you have certain moves and stuff, dancing at raves is mostly freeform, you just dance in a way that feels good. :)

Have you ever been to a large EDM event on MDMA? If not, what are you waiting for? =D I think you'll figure out everything yourself once you are peaking on the dance floor.

With that said, people do tend to dance to the beat. So people will be dancing slower at a deep house event and doing crazy moves at a drum & bass event. But I think that self explanatory. =D

I'm actually just waiting for an event...

There don't seem to be many, or maybe they are all more underground and hard to find? We have EDM clubs, but those are more like how clubs typically are, and I don't imagine them being very 'ravey'. I'd probably have to travel a bit to find a big event.

Oh okay, yeah don't worry about any particular dance moves or whatever. It will all make sense once you're there.

Raves (well the real ones) are supposed to be about being yourself and having a good time. Formal moves and stuff like that doesn't really fit into the rave "vibe".

EDM clubs can be pretty cool if you find a good one. It all depends on the atmosphere of the club. I'll put it this way; if there are a lot of people rolling, the music isn't too commercial and the club doesn't have a pretentious vibe then a club night can be just as good as an "open air" event.

While the fashion has definitely changes, I'd say the dance moves haven't changed that much. =D

Dont learn - feel.

I had been raving for years before one of my beer drinking friends started to get interested in the 'scene'. They had never tried any drug and (more shocking) had never been on a dancefloor before :0. Well slowly they tried MDMA and after a few months asked if they could join me at an event.

When we walked through the door and the sound/music/lights hit them they were amazed, we had a little walk around so they could get the feel for the place and then I took up a spot on the dancefloor and started. They were simply standing there with a bottle of water looking about at everyone going crazy (obviously thinking WTF) - well few moments later (drugs kicking in) and they were wide eyed r, huge smile on their face and dancing away like they were a regular :D.

I personally hate 'set moves' and even some of the shuffling seems put on - listen to the music and move the way you want. If you have two left feet so what - who cares. DANCE!

I Agree with the guy, if some asshole came up to my woman grinding away i'd knock him the fuck down too. (don't think i'm acting hard, i'm really not. more than likely get my ass kicked but i'd still make my point)

This is so true!

If you're listening to electronic music thinking "how do I dance to this". You're not listening to the right kind - only you can tell what the right kind is because when you hear it, you will just want to move to it in bizzare ways.

My first rave was excellent! no drugs, no booze, nothing like that. I heard the music and saw people doing what I used to do in my room! It was so natural and I can still do that today and more often than not I go out, dance for 10 hours straight til 6am without a drop of booze in me or a pill in my stomach because hearing my favorite music out loud is enough to get me going.

My point is, you don't choose the music; the music chooses you! there's a lot of EDM out there, this guide shows loads of different genres but even then doesn't cover everything! :)
