I had just a quick question about what my shrink prescribed me today.

I went up to him citing my sleep problems and slight general anxiety (already prescribed lyrica for it, which works wonders) and he ended up prescribing me Prozac in addition to the lyrica.

As far as I have read Prozac is an anti-depressant and infact causes insomnia.

Just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar prescription before and if it worked ?

Thanks

That's what would be the logical thought process here.

But Lyrica is what I've been on for anxiety for quite a while now and thanks to i conveyed my worsening insomnia to him and that's when he suggested Prozac, seems weird right ?

I really can't figure it out either especially since I told him I used Xanax and Melatonin in the past to help me sleep. Really can't figure this one out, Would it be worth calling him tomorrow and just asking for a change in prescription ?

He sounds like one of those doctors who are super leary about prescribing anything even vaguely abuseable. Prozac can be used off label to treat anxiety since it's a widespread belief that anxiety is exacerbated by underlying depression. However, you say you were already on Lyrica for that so that doesn't really make sense either. And if he assumed the anxiety was worsening and thus causing the insomnia, wouldn't it make more sense to either up the dose or switch the meds to something stronger/specifically aimed at addressing sleep issues?

Sounds like this doctor is a little bit of a clueless one, especially since you mentioned specific other meds that have worked for you in the past. Reluctance to prescribe Xanax would be understandable but he can't possibly have anything against Melatonin. What will he offer you next? Sleepytime tea and a hot water bottle?

Call him up and tell him you've noticed no difference and the lack of sleep is affecting your quality of life. Be clear about wanting to go back to the medication you've used with successful results in the past. If the sleep is really bad, you might even want to ask for a sleeping medication like Ambien.

I'd just like to remind some of the posters in this thread that we don't allow discussion on what to say to your doctor to get medication no matter the reason.

As the OP has valid concerns over what was prescribed to them, I'm going to leave this open, but ask that everyone keeps the above in mind.

In the permutation which the fluoxetine halts your anxiety, there is a possibility that your sleeping problems will resolve. The results will not be immediate, since SSRI's take time to build up effective levels in the blood.

This may work, or it may not. It's up to you to make an informed decision on whether it's the optimum option. SSRI drugs can be marvelous for some, and sugar pills to others.

Good luck.

I feel that SSRI's are much too powerful and potentially damaging to even try for something like insomnia, since the chance it will help is very low. I suggest not taking the prozac at all.

MOST doctors are retarded when it comes to medicine, do your own research and tell your 'shrink' what you want b/c he obviously is oblivious to how to properly prescribe the right meds... If i was your shrink I would prescribe your Restoril for insomnia, thats the best med for insomnia ever made (at least that I have tried, ambien just makes you act a fool and walk around mumbling nonsense and you'll find yourself in your living room the next morning with cake all over your chest and your tv upside down and have no recollection of what happened... remember Restoril (Temazepam 30mg) is your answer to INSOMNIA.

My shrink did the same damn thing. Prescribed me Prozac and Seroquel!

I can't wait to see this new Psych, I'm going to tell him what I want. I can't see Prozac helping you sleep, and I'm with bloodshed - SSRIs prescribed for conditions such as insomnia borders on malfeasance as far as I'm concerned.

While it is good to let them know what meds have worked for you in the past I would tread lightly and carefully regarding going in and "telling him what to prescribe" to you. This is especially true if the med in question is scheduled (a drug of abuse)medication.

Not only is that one of the first signs of what they consider "drug seekers" but many docs already have issues prescribing any scheduled substance. And when you act as if you know too much about narcotics or specifically say "I want Xanax" (or insert name of whatever drug) it generally sends up a red flag for doctors. If they even think you are just trying to get something to abuse you will end up having hard time with that doc for a long time in regards to getting scripted anything that has a potential for abuse. Also, many doctors hate to be told what they should do regarding treatments and prescriptions. It sucks and you should research and be knowledgable about your health and anything related but be very careful not to step on their egos (not all drs but most).

I say this as a nurse for almost 20 years (who has worked with egotistical docs), as a chronic pain patient and from tons of research into understanding what makes docs prescribe/not prescribe and pay attention to patient details.

I'm not saying this is your intent by any means. I would definitely always tell a dr about things that have (or have not) helped in the past but just wanted to warn you about the danger of going in and "telling" them what you want prescribed for you, especially a narcotic. Sometimes you just have to suck it up, take what they give you initially, give it a couple day or a week then call them and lot them know if its not working for you. It sucks doing the whole trial and error thing with meds when you know a specific one works but sometimes you have to play it their way. The have the pad and the pen that writes the signature!

You should ditch the Prozac and ask for hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is one of the better non narcotic meds for sleep and it also has some anxiolytic properties.

Closed as this has now went further down that road. PM any questions.
