"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
A new Oregon law went into effect January 1st making it a crime to smoke cigarettes in a vehicle with minors. It is a secondary offense to smoke in the car with minors. This means law enforcement has to stop a driver for a separate violation first. Then police can write a ticket with a fine of $250 for smoking in the vehicle with children. The second time it happens, the fine is $500. Jason Davis with Lane County Health and Human Services says rolling down the window does not provide adequate ventilation.

Davis: "In 2006 the Harvard School of Public Health did a study that showed the levels after rolling down your windows in your car while smoking still exceeded the hazardous levels of the EPA's Air Quality Index. So what we're talking about here is significant air pollution within your car anytime that you smoke a cigarette."

I'm fine with that, as long as the jury is out on whether it's harmful, anything other than erring on the side of caution is just selfish.

Good. Hopefully it catches on elsewhere. I get mad every time I see people smoke around their children.

I think.this is a step forward as well I've been at work and seen a hundreds times over a smoking parent with a car full of kids, it makes me cringe.
Not the best influence to be setting, not sure if its bad or not after reading second hand smoke isn't harmful on this site.

Under 18 is consider a minor in most states.
You can legally buy tabacco after your 18th also go to strip clubs but have to be 21 for alcoholic beverages or to enter clubs. Atleast here in redneck podunk Idaho lol

Yeah its law here as afterlyfe said, which is good, i hated growing up sitting in the car with my parents smoking, even with the windows down it sucked.

Also they have just banned smoking at beaches here which is long over due, but I doubt it will be enforced much, maybe at some busy city beaches, but there are so many coastal beaches with no cops and no rangers so who's going to enforce it?

I fully support this, though as Numbers noted, it is not a crime if they can't stop you for it.
I would prefer if it were a crime.
People who smoke in a car with children are really missing something basic, I would say.
Like common sense, maybe?

Don't you dare picking on my mother, she even smoked while pregnant with me (only thing she did though) and my brother. My brother isn't defective....:D (I don't think my childhood ADHD that turned into ADD when I started to play baseball every summer and hockey every winter) was caused by her smoking...back in the 70's they didn't know much of the dangers to the foetus from nicotine et al. And she smoked around us when kids....only thing I attribute to it and am kinda mad about is the recurring middle ear otitis I got in my childhood and well into my early adulthood, but the worst ones were when I was a kid. When you're given oxycodone 5mg pills (I still remember them being the same 5mg OxyIR's I did for fun years later) for pain with your antibiotics as a 6th grader, you're in hell. But otherwise she was an A+ mother who had me know my alphabet at 2 year olds and kick everyone's ass on NES. ;p
