i heard somewhere about a study where scientists proded parts of peoples brains and they would claim they smelt flowers or things like that..how long until we're lucky enough to get drugs that make ONLY make you smell certain smells for a few minutes, or only make you smell things, or make you experience feelings of orgasm for a certian amount of time? no intoxication (although that would be fun too), only these and limitless other alterations of perceptions.
 
I had a train of thought that was somewhat similar to what you're talking about. Kind of like the "feelies" in Brave New World. I was thinking about pets and how they please our senses of touch (fur you nasty people), sight,hearing. I can't think of any pets that we taste or smell for recreation... I don't know where I'm going with this. I've been drinking
 
Unlikely *ever*. Drugs spread through your brain by way of your blood vessels and act similarly on whatever neurons they happen to come across. In other words if you have similar neurons in two places in your brain you can't control a drug to directly effect one and not the other.
On the other hand there is a primitive technology used for studying the brain called Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Essentially by manipulating magnetic fields it induces electrical currents in certain parts of the brain. Something like this might one day be improved to the point you are talking about.
If this is a bust you might have to wait for nano-tech.
Still I think you overestimate the usefullness of these things. Sure it is neat (and absolutely essential for us to really understand the workings of the brain) to be able to stimulate certain sensations. The real holy grail from a recreational standpoint though is mood alteration. As mood appears to be a more global phenomenon influenced by many natural neruotransmitters and neuropeptides this may very well be within the reach of drugs. Who the fuck cares if you are smelling flowers if you are absolutely totally euphoric.
 
Germans are advancing in techniques to induce electrical currents in the spine, at the right place, it is posibble to stimulate nerves that that normally carry signals from the reproduction organs.
Innitially made to relieve people with muscle spasms, but seems to serve well as orgazmorator and no this is not a internet hoax it's real.
 
that could be cool, but i mean maybe its just me, but the whole smell of daisies for example, like its not just the smell.. but holding the daisies.. like its not the feel of petting my do rex.. the awsomest pitbull.. but having him here with, sitting on my lap.. ya know.. i dont know, maybe its just me..

Okay, so I'm going to sound like the stereotypical intro to psych student, spouting off ideas that I'm not really sure I even remember correctly....but here goes.
Assuming I do recall correctly, my psych professor told us of an experiment kind of dealing with this subject. Since the hypothalamus in the brain is known as the "pleasure center," they implanted a little electrode type thing in a rat's hypothalamus. As I'm sure we've all heard of teaching rats to press levers in the little Skinner boxes, it was slightly similar in that everytime the rat pressed the lever, it got a stimulation of the hypothalamus...needless to say, they were very happy rats. Some of the rats would forego eating and sleeping, and they never tired of that activity. Kinda seems like you could spark some controversy over whether or not we'd like to introduce another potential addiction.
Anyhow, the guy that observed the rats, Delgado, used the same type of thing when he staged the first remote-controlled bull fight. He stepped in the bull ring and as the bull was preparing to charge, he stimulated the hypothalamus, thus transforming the bull from a raging, snorting thing ready to gore him, the bull kinda broke into a cartoon-like happy go lucky trot.
They also tried this to control rage responses in a person. Whenever the person became enraged, he had to first exhibit self-control, and he was then given a similar stimulation of the hypothalamus.
