I've been using bluelight for a while but finally decided I wanted to post too! If anyone can point me to where I can post questions about medications regarding my insomnia that'd be great. (I'm aware this is not a "medical" site so to speak. But in my experience people on these "medical" sites don't understand the chemistry behind chemicals as well as bluelighters.) *I am not using this as a replacement for a Doctor, i simply want suggestions for medications that would be worth talking to my doctor about* After trying many meds over the past months (about 10 or so) i seem to be running low on medications for long term relief of insomnia. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey there. Welcome to BL.

If there are particular insomnia-related meds you're interested in discussing, you'd probably to best posting questions to the Other Drugs forum: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/forums/58-Other-Drugs.

Or you might try the Basic Drug Discussion forum: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/forums/16-Basic-Drug-Discussion.

Lastly, don't underestimate the power of the handy-dandy BL search engine: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/search.php . A few well-chosen searches often--for me--turn up a trove of good stuff.

Overall, you'll find folks in both of the forums I mentioned really helpful and, for the most part, knowledgeable. Good luck. Sorry to hear about the insomnia. I had that for most of my life. Benzodiazapenes pretty well cured me of the no sleeping, though at some cost ;).

Cheers.

Ah, thank you for your input. I considered benzos for a long while but decided atleast for now I'm gonna try to avoid them as a treatment option. (I probably should have mentioned this earlier but I'm 15 so brain development is still a concern.)

i watch my health habits closely so not many problems there, though i am guilty of having a bit of caffeine(I've limited it to weekends now) and have seen little to no improvement. Right now i take 3mg of melatonin around 6 p.m. and .1mg of clonodine around 1 hour before my goal bedtime(so i usually take it around 7-8 p.m.) The meds help but not enough. My doc is leaning towards a circadian rythem issue so i would use a light box, but I'm lucky if i get out of bed 30 minutes before i have to leave for school:/

The meds I've tried are Trazadone at 100mg, Trileptal at 150mg (for a few months my doc suspected bi polar 2 but it has since been ruled out), seroquel 25mg (gave me extreme anxiety and didn't help me sleep anyway), Remeron 22.5mg (i started at a low dose and went up by halves), Ambien 10mg and on a separate occasion Ambien 3.5mg sublinguals. Which leaves me at clonodine 0.1mg which i am currently taking along with 3mg of melatonin

Interesting the Seroquel gave you anxiety. It used to help me when no others would - but I respond well to dopamine antagonists for sleep. Had Excessive Wakefulness Syndrome as a child. Clonidine can have rebound effects actually, which can add to insomnia sometimes, depending upon how long you've taken it. I would be careful with that one.
Remeron is much safer than Ambien. So is Trazadone, although an older medication and antidepressant.
It seems you've tried a lot of combos. Have you tried any amino acids or eastern type herbal medications?

There is also the Dark Side and Mental Health Forums that might be of use for anxiety issues and causes/concerns fears

Anyways, Welcome to BL!

I'll second CH's question about exercise. I know it sounds hokey, but seriously, aside from some really powerful meds, nothing helped my chronic insomnia like doing regular exercise. Doesn't even have to be a lot, or particularly hard core. But getting a good, steady regime of increased physical activity has been shown over and over to help.
