Neurotoxicity amphetamine

Hi all,

I'm concerned about damage that might be done by dextroamphetamine, since I have been prescribed this medication. Maybe some of you know its toxicity profile.

My current understanding is that d-amp is not directly neurotoxic, but can indirectly cause damage(through dopamine overflow) if dose is high enough. I do not know at what dosage this may occur.

Also, I have read that d-amp downregulates d2 receptors, although I have also read that it does not downregulate d2 receptors but the brain will simply synthesize less dopamine.

My daily dose is 20 mg, which is relatively safe, I think. I'm taking days off in weekends and holidays.

Thanks.

If taken as prescribed, there shouldn't be a problem, but if you're concerned, vitamin C should prevent some oxidative stress caused by amphetamines and reduce the duration.

you should check out this page: Erowid - about Health & Amphetamines

It has a lot of information on it, I wanted to post most of it here but that would make for a long-winded post that would be relatively hard to sift through so I just post the link, check it out as it contains much informaion that should concern you :).

20mg isn't a high dose. Amphetamine is a drug which has been taken on a wide scaled since the 1930's. The only study which seemed to conclude that its neurotoxic was done by someone who has questionable credentials.

If you raise your dose, you're more likely to develop an addiction.

Taking days off may be a good idea with this medication.

What matters is that you're taking it as prescribed. Doctors generally won't do you wrong.

Dex-amphetamine is a very powerful amphetamine. Its good that you take days off. The recreational comedown from this drug is realllly brutal. Neuro-toxicity i believe occurs when too much is taken and the dopamine is freely converted to norepinephrine which is not good when high densitys exist in ur brain, causes anxiety etc. I know some people who weigh less then 60kg that take 60-80mg/day of dex. Stick to your doc's instructions and get good sleep and you should be ok.
