Netherlands to Close Prisons: Not Enough Criminals

^ I don't think anyone is arguing the Netherlands is some sort of utopia, just that the way they run their society is a lot better than most places.

Cool. The Dutch have been historically practical. The US could learn so much from the Dutch. While the Dutch have no problem learning from the positive aspects of the US.

The US could learn a lot from a bunch of countries both past and present. Unfortunately we think we know everything and everyone is inferior to our great knowledge and wisdom so it's our duty to tell everyone else where they are wrong not learn from them.

Most definitely. I may have come across as NL idealistic, but I do realize you guys have your share of problems.

And yet, I feel like they have much better policy and etc. than the United States, in addition to what is assumed to be lower crime rates.

I have no evidence however. Care to bash my opinion in? ;)

Well I am not Dutch (US citizen) but I do agree the drug policy is so much better than in the US. One weakness in the soft-drugs dept is that while sale of weed is allowed, production is still illegal. Therefore, much of production is done by organized crime.

My point though is that its not this lefty, Disneyland paradise. There is massive immigration from Morocco, Suriname, etc which makes it decidedly un-homegenous (a good thing) but there is a lot of conflict there and NL has a famous right-wing party in the PVV.

Also, there are parts of the country that are EXTREMELY christian conservative (bet that is a surprise :) ) and Christian parties are quite serious here, some of them bible-based political parties.

Those are some examples, hope it helps. I love living here for sure, but there is a tendency to place the Netherlands on a pedestal when it has many of the same problems as in the US.

It's just too bad the Netherlands are starting to change their mind about the legality of weed. Coffeeshops seem to close down one by one and they won't hand out new licenses for them. Just last year they went and made shrooms illegal (although they forgot to put one species on the list so it's still possible to get them). I can imagine all cofeeshops getting closed down in the next few decades. It's all because of drug tourism and the fact that the Dutch government feels their liberal drug laws have tarnished the Netherlands' reputation.

About that drug tourism, I seriously hope they get that law passed that restricts coffeeshop sales to Dutch nationals only. Half of Belgium buys their weed by hopping the border, further exacerbating this Dutch reputation of being a drug haven.
Other countries should open up their own coffeeshops instead.
