I crept inside the cell to sleep
Firmly closed the door
Determined to get some rest
The bars now there to keep them out
The world a prison
My cell the only freedom
And rest i did!
Dreaming of color and simplicity
Pallet and sack a blissful comfort
Laying amongst rats
Days spent with a grin
Watching them sleep content and peaceful
Moving only to find greater comfort
Not a horizon
Nor a scratching scurry for supremacy
To be seen
Or imagined
In this small square world
Time passed
I grew strong and self-assured
Finding secrets in the whispers of my thoughts
Confidence came in silence
Without the sound of opposable attraction
There came stability
Ballance
And one day
No day at all
The realisation came
That these rats were dead
They had been addicts
Of peace, of rest, of comfort
In boredom they had stagnated
Putrefied
And now sleep they would
Whether they liked it or not
Forever
And perhaps a second more
I sprang from my pallet
And strode through the locked door
Out of the cell
And outside, pausing, I smiled at the world
It had grown large and mysterious in my absence
And the rats,
The millions upon billions of rats,
All biting and gnawing
On both live and dead alike
Fighting frenzied for the top of the pile
But now i knew their secret
I knew their boredom
Perhaps better than they knew it themselves
And nothing could stop my laughter now
As i climbed the piles of rats
Heading for the sun....
Firmly closed the door
Determined to get some rest
The bars now there to keep them out
The world a prison
My cell the only freedom
