Need surgery while taking Suboxone

---I'm very new to this site (like, "today" new)...Anyhow, I have a question: I have been taking 24 mg. Suboxone for eight years now; I had just begun to taper, as I want to eventually be "Sub-free," when I discovered I need to have rather major surgery. My Sub doctor told me about stopping the Suboxone about 5 days prior to surgery, so it wouldn't interfere with the pain meds I'll be given in the hospital, but, here's the meat of my question: If I am put on morphine/demerol for 2 weeks, then Vicodin for 6-8 more weeks (thus equaling 2 months or so "off" of Suboxone), would I still have withdrawal symptoms from the 8 years of Sub, if I just "stopped" all opiods after the 8 weeks of Vicodin? ---Any input/advice would be GREATLY appreciated, as I will be weak, and anticipate a long recovery from my surgery, and need to know whether to have a refill of my Suboxone on hand......

Your tolerance is so high from that much suboxone that I doubt the pain meds you will be given will do much aside from helping with the suboxone withdrawal.

As for the second question, of course you will have withdrawals after stopping the pain meds a few weeks after stopping the subs. It might be enough time off the subs for it to be the shorter withdrawals from short acting opioids as opposed to the longer withdrawals from suboxone, but it will still suck.

Dam 24 mgs even 5 days won't be enough that's sooooo much bupe. And for 8 years your receptors are probably not gonna be able to accept any opiates anymore you would need enough morphone to kill the average person.
I was taking to a guy on here before in the same situation as you and he went through hell. They couldn't give him enough morphine to kill even the withdrawal from the sub let alone any pain. He was off them for 8 months and still couldnt feel pain reloef from oxycodone. Subs can make the opiate receptors unable to accept any opiates onto them when you use such a high dose for sich a long period of time.Thats crazy your doc let you take sub's at such a high dose for so long I mean why not taper when you get the same feeling from 2mg as you do on 24??? I feel bad for you man doctors font know shit about this drug giving out doses like 24 mgs to people jeez mabye if the person did two 8balls a day that might be enough for 24 mgs of sub but even for a habit like that its too much. I came off an 8 ball a day of close to pure China white heroin after selling kilos of it for a few years and I didn't even need that much sub's I needed 8mgs to hold me over.
I think your best bet is to stay on suboxone I mean its really the only good option for someone like you. For Me I could stop the sub's on the day before surgery and be fine to be given pain meds the next day but that's because in on a reasonable dose of 0.3mgs three times a day so it doesn't block anything. I would ask if they can give you IV buprenorphine mabye. The pain meds will most likely not work well and wear off really quick almost as if the can't cling to the opiate receptors. It happens a lot to people on ridiculously high doses of bupe for long periods doctors for the most part don't yet know about it cause most have only been prescribing bupe for a couple years at most its only recently grown in popularity.
I'm sorry your doctor has done this to you it sucks you never knew you could have taken 1 or 2 mgs everyday all these years and felt just the same as on 24mgs if not better euphoria and pain relief also you wouldn't have destroyed your receptors taking a Lower dose. Anything over about 8 mgs only adds side effects and no more euphoria or pain relief will come from taking more once you've reached 8mgs it will just attach to receptors In Your stomach causing constipation along with headaches. I never knew how strong this drug was either until I tapered down to 0.3mgs every 6 hours and actually felt higher and more pain relief on the low dose then I did on the high dose of 8mgs. Low doses give more euphoria and act more like a full agonist such as oxycodone or morphine. This is why people who take bupe for pain usually start off prescribed 0.2 mg tablets every 4 hours or 0.4mg tablets every 4 hours this way it acts like a full agonist and give pain relief and/or euphoria. Whereas 24 mgs will just make you feel like shit and block itself from working properly acting like an opiate antagonist such as narcan which is something they give people to reverse the effects of heroin bringing someone out of an overdose.
