Need some quick chemical details about Meth

A friend of mine believes that when you smoke meth (or Yaba in his case) it builds up in your system over time and after say a week you'll all of a sudden get a buzz from "the build up in your system"

I've had this conversation with him a few times and he's always 100% sure he's right so i just leave it as i can't be arse with the ego battle. However, last night he was tellig this girl about Yaba and was saying something along the lines of "...It's not that bad (she was reciting hype and propaganda), but the good thing about it is you can smoke it every day and because it leaves a build-up in your system, when the effects go down all of a sudden you'll have a boot and get a massive buzz cause of the build-up"

I just turned around and said "Bollox, thats a myth" and the battle went from there.

He bases all his info on one guy from london who smokes loads of the stuff and told him about this "build-up". When I asked him if he thought that was a good source and whether he believed him he said "Yes, well you believe all that rubbish you read on websites. This guys been smoking this stuff for ages and he knows what he's talking ahout"

One thing that really gets me pissed off is when people regard the research i do on drugs VIA the web as "rubbish" and prefer to believe some bull-shiting fuck head whos just passing on all the bollox he's heard from all the other fuck heads who think they know what they're talking about because they believe every urban myth they hear.

I'm rambling a bit now so i'll get to the point.

I'm making a little e-mail for my friend with some details on Meth (yaba - he doesn't even believe that!) so far the main piece of info I can find is this:

Plasma Life
The length of time that methamphetamine will stay in the plasma (blood) is between 4 to 6 hours. It can be detected in the urine one hour after use and up to 48 hours after use.

That to me say's that after 48 hours theres no trace of the chemical left in your system, hence no build up. But what i want to know is WHY it can't build up - i know that meth comes in a salt form (usually hydrochloride) but as im not a scientist I don't know WHY it's impossible for the stuff to kind of "cling" on to your insides after you smoke it. I would imagine it's because the meth would dissolve into your blood no matter where it ends up and from there it slowly vanishes (after 48 hours it's gone)

Can someone with more technical knowledge just explain to me in a bit more detail why this whole "build-up" idea is rubbish? I want to know 100% that what i'm trying to explain to my friend is right before I go on this mission of education.

I hate that too.

From what I can gather Meth, in its usual state is highly soluble in water (and a Google seems to confirm it). As such it would not be able to "hide" in fatty tissues the same way something like THC can, which is fat soluble.
It would easily be flushed out by blood plasma or the natural workings of cells. Once its back into the blood plasma it would be be removed by the liver and kidneys.

Cannabis can build up in fatty tissues of the body easily (hence why hardcore smokers give positive tests for 90 days) but that doesn't give you a sudden stoning at the end of a week. It just sits there, pretty much inert.

Sounds to me like some tweaker myth.

Overview
Methamphetamine (also known as speed, meth, crystal, crank, yabba or thai pills, and sometimes confusingly called ice) is a chemical widely known for its stimulant properties on the human body. It is frequently confused with other drugs that share similar symptoms, including amphetamine, 4-methyl-aminorex, ephedrine, caffeine, and other chemicals, both legal and illegal.


Terminology
In this document, we shall refer to the drugs by their common chemical names, rather than by "street names", since the street names do not have a one-to-one correspondence to actual chemicals. For example, the term "speed" can mean methamphetamine or amphetamine. The term "ice" is generally considered to apply to 4-methyl-aminorex, but is often used to refer to relatively pure (and in some cases, not so pure) forms of methamphetamine.

We shall use the term "methamphetamine" to refer to the substance in either its free base (i.e. simple, unadorned) or salt (usually hydrochloride) form. When precision is needed, we shall explicitly state one form or the other.

Pharmacology
This is one of the most difficult sections to write, partially because there is very little "science" involved. The literature gives conflicting reports, due to the fact that many criterion are subjective, and probably also due to confusion over terminology.

The pharmacological effects of methamphetamine are very similar to those of similarly structured molecules.


Administration
Methamphetamine can be taken orally, snorted, smoked or injected, in approximately increasing order of immediacy of onset.


Onset
Onset can be immediate (in the case of injection), or can take as long as 30-40 minutes if ingested orally.

Dosage
A toxic reaction (or overdose) can occur at relatively low levels, 50 milligrams of pure drug for a non-tolerant user. Different peoples' metabolisms work at different rates, and drug strengths vary, so there is no way of stating a "safe" or "unsafe" level of use.


Effects
These include euphoria, hyperexcitability, extreme nervousness, accelerated heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, restlessness, insomnia, tooth grinding, incessant talking, and other effects.

Methamphetamine and other CNS stimulants have strong bronchodilation effects. Vasoconstriction (tightening of blood vessels) and pupil dilation are also common. Elevated blood pressure, heart rate, and other general symptoms of increased sympathetic nervous activity.

The physical effects are almost assuredly due to interactions between the amphetamine structure and human physiology, probably due to the similarity to adrenaline (epinephrine).

Mental capacity is not diminished directly by the drug. In fact, some studies have shown slight increases in mental capacity on simple tasks. It has been prescribed for attention deficit disorder, among other things.

Confusing reports here tend to center around the effects of fatigue on mental capacity.

Emotional responses may range from euphoria to anger and paranoia. Preliminary doses tend to produce the former, while continued use (e.g. for three or more days) tends to produce the latter.

It appears that these feelings may be linked to the neurotransmitters dopamine and/or serotonin, although I have not seen a good reference on this yet.

Some other info which is quite interesting about the different coloured pills you get.


Methamphetamine in its pure hydrochloride salt form is colorless. However, products on the market today are often not colorless. The following is a table of some common impurities and the colors associated with them. Note: There is no doubt a segment of the dealers who will add food coloring or some other such color to their drug to make it more appealing, with the philosophy that a brightly-colored product may sell better than an off color product. This is relatively uncommon however.
RED: The product was made from pseudoephedrine, and the red coloring of the tablet was not adequately washed away (it is difficult)


ORANGE: Ephedrine sulfate was used, and some of the sulfate was reduced to sulfur.
PURPLE: Iodine from a phosphorus-iodine reaction was not washed out.
GREEN: Copper (or other metallic) salts somehow made their way in to the mixture, probably due to the reaction vessel used in the manufacture.
BROWN: Oxidized red coloring (see above), or tablating agent was present in the reduction.

dimer) are identified as impurities in methamphetamine tablet. Caffeine and
ethyl vanillin are also detected as diluents and/or adulterants, and

samples . In addition, trans-3,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazolidone is newly found
as an impurity. For characterization and comparison of methamphetamine tablet
exhibits, intensely and commonly detectable nine peaks are selected as the
factor for multivariate analysis. The procedures reported here permit
classification of 250 analyzed exhibits into five groups and characterization of
classified groups.



Heres a definitive list of how long shit we take can stay in your system at detectable amounts for.

Yep, your friend is a moron. I would print out studies showing meth's plasma life -- do a search on www.pubmed.com.

Also, you could remind your friend of a little thing called 'tolerance', which builds very rapidly with meth, and would mean that over time the same amount of meth gets him less and less high...
 
Chalk's post is great, but the short version is basically no, it doesnt build up. amphetamines are 'half life' drugs. A half life is the time it takes for half of the drug to be gone for your system. For meth this time is about 4 hours i think. So after the first hour, 50% of the original dose hasnt already be metabolized into its component parts. in the second hour, 25% (half of half) is left. 3 hours 12.5%, etc etc, so that after about 48 hours so little is left that it is virtually undetectable in your system.
 
Yes, many of those drugs listed for detection differ from their chemical partners. Many of them depend on the doses used and how often, while some other of them have longer half-lives, benzodiazepines in particular. For instance, consuming a 20mg Diazepam (without previous use for longer than a couple months) may completly be undetectable as quick as six to eight hours. The half-life of Diazepam is extremly short, the very reason it is administered for alcohol withdrawls and seizures. Using Diazepam every day on the other hand and it may be in your system for up to 3 days. Such long-acting benzodiazepines as Klonopin may show up anywhere between 14-21 days with daily use.
 
not sure if this has been posted, but the major reason that meth won't stick around your system is that it is highly water soluable. it quickly leaves your system in your piss. this is why marijuana is sometimes detectable for months after someone has smoked. unlike meth (and many other drugs) it is not very water soluable so only a small amount leaves your system each time you piss. it takes a long time to rid your system because you only lose a bit each day.

i have had a few tweeker friends who have experienced similar things like you are describing. but it is probabaly more of a mental thing. sometimes when i have been drinking i will get wicked jaw clenching as though i were on MDMA, but i wouldn't have taken the drug in months...
