Hey everyone. So I need advice on the fastest, safest way to get off methadone. I have been addicted to opiates for about 7 years, and couldn't go to a detox or anything to get off, so I started going to a methadone clinic about mid February and I regret it. I want to be clean so bad and have the motivation and support to do it and am so ready.. I don't want to end up with a worse addiction then I had to begin with. So I got up to 50mg and last week went down to 45mg and haven't felt anything at all, saturday I didn't even dose and had no issue. So I'm supposed to continue going down 5mg a week, but that will still take roughly 2 months and I'm really not wanting to drag it out that long. I want to do it in like a month, so I'm thinking of trying to go down 5mg every 3 to 4 days, as long as I can handle it. With what I've heard about how rough it will be and what I have read online have me scared and worried... so I'm asking if anyone can please give me any advice, or their own experience with getting off, and just help me figure out the best way to go about this. Thank you in advance.

I would not recommend what I did but I will tell you how I did it. I used to take Methadone pills for pain, about 10 mg a day. I had a drug test coming up for a job and the company required disclosure of all drugs I was taking. I didn't want to disclose that I was taking Methadone, afraid they would think I was an addict and discriminate against me. So I left it off the list and took a chance on passing the test (I passed btw). I did a RAPID taper where I completely stopped in less than a week. It was brutal, and my dose was lower than yours. I would really try to seek out a doctor to help you. An option would be to add a low dose benzo as you drop your dose but then you risk picking up a worse addiction.

One alternative is to use ghb for a short period. It stimulates the same reseptors in your brain... Gaba reseptor.
or if this is hard for you to get a hold on, maybe rehab is the best alternative...

good luck... I belive u find your path.

best regard Krogh.

Methadone taper can be tricky. Sometimes you won't feel the effects until well after dropping mg's. I went from 120 down to 45 myself, among other tapers I have done. My advice would be just to take it slow so you don't have to endure such bad wd's that you go out and buy off the street. It can be painless if done patiently, or it can be hellishly brutal if you try to hurry it.

Of course the first day isnt going to be that bad, but you have to remember with methadone, the wds get worse and worse as the days pass, not better and better by each day. and it peaks eventually, Ive been thru methadone wd many times and it is HELL ON EARTH!

Good luck!

The faster you do it.. the harder it will be and the more withdrawal you will feel. The reason the clinics do it so slow, is that there have been studies done that show that kind of taper being the most successful. Rapid tapers tend to not work out in the long run.. but, that's not to say it isn't done and isn't done successfully. Plenty of people do it that way.. just it's much more difficult, so a lot also fail.

Most clinics will work with you to come up with a different taper plan. Just tell them you want to come down faster. At only 50mg's, doing it in a month won't be horrible. All depends on if you can truly handle it.. once you get to the lower doses, like 10 and 20mg's and below, you'll really start to feel it more.

Don't be in such a rush to come off, IMO. Just because you don't get on and then hop off right away... doesn't mean you have to be on it for life either.. there is a lot of gray area in between that. If you're already on it.. you might as well do it right, stay on it till you're ready (the studies have shown that your chances of staying sober go up astronomically at 6 months +, and even more so at 1 year + of maintenance).
