Oh no, where am I?
Hello there!

I want to move interstate in Australia but I have no idea how. I have no rental history, I just finished up with my job but I do have a pretty tidy nest egg for the trip, bond, rent, general expenses for a good while, I just don't know how to go about this.

I just want to be there and not here, has anybody been in this situation before and could give me some advice?

It can be daunting. I'm in the process of trying to move to a dif state also. I've lived there before and it's still a bitch.

If u have enough $ saved then u dnt need a job immediately n can save that for when u get there.

Easiest way I've found is find out where u wanna go, how much ur willing to spend monthly etc, and look on shit like Craigslist (is there Craigslist in australia?) or other search sites online for apartments/rentals/housing. Its possible I mean ppl do it all the time. U just gotta b a lil determined and do alot of searching

Do u know anyone in the area ur moving to? If u do asking them if they know of anything could help alot. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Good luck!

Ps. Whatever u do don't just buy a ticket there and think u can figure it out once u get there, chances are it won't work out ull spend alotta $ n ull fuck urself. Think ahead

Yeah for sure do a little research before you go. We moved across the country (US) once without anywhere set up to live or anything before we left (jobs, place to stay, nothing really) and it got expensive quick. Plus when we got there they were having a couple of major events going on for 2 weeks and every single hotel/motel room, campground, everything within 150 miles was booked solid for several weeks! We didn't even have somewhere to stay while we looked for a place to live!

I found the Aussie Craigslist (gumtree) and I've managed to find myself a very cheap looking crack den of an apartment block, but it's super close to the city and its got 4 walls and a roof, gonna go check it out when I head over next week, lets hope it goes well!

edit: owner is moving interstate too and needs someone to take over the lease, aw yeah :)

My experience has been different. I think you can waste too much time, or even decide it's too hard to do anything at all, by worrying about figuring everything out before you make a move. Of course, be sensible...but I think people can surprise themselves with their resilience and ability to make do in situations like this. I've upped and moved interstate succesfully in Aus on the spur of the moment, as well as travelling solo in the US and Europe with very little planning.

I moved up to Qld with an ex boyfriend - when we broke up, rather than returning to my home town of Melbourne, I thought fuck it, I'll try somewhere new. I'd been on holiday to Darwin a few months prior and loved the place, so decided that would be a great place to live. I didn't know anyone there, but I bought a ticket and booked into a youth hostel for a couple of weeks. It took a week to find an apartment to rent and move in there. I had a fucking awesome time - it worked out so well. I would have stayed if it were not for me being accepted into my master's program in Melbourne some months later. I'd like to move back there soon.

So I'd say, go for it...is there any aspect in particular you're looking for advice about?

Excellent advice. Don't waste to much time trying to plan everything out because it's pretty likely nothing will fall through like you thought it would when you were thinking about it in your head. You won't know until you actually get there
