Tested this pill today, a brown Playboy. I tested as usual, but this time the purple color did not appear for about 25 seconds. I could see no smoking. After about a minute, it was dark purple/black, no grey. Ususally, I get an instant purple reaction. Could this pill be DXM? Also, could leaving my tester in the hot car all day affect results? Have I ruined my tester?

Hey. the sun will kill your pill tester
i had this happen to me ,i got another test kit and same pill had a better result,

What color does the liquid have ??
Even if it has gone brownish, the reaction should be quickly to purple/almost black.
What you describe does not sound like an Ecstasy like substance.

I just tested three more pills all of different type. Two of them went purple immediately. The other took about 10 seconds. I guess that the Brown Playboy is something funky. What makes the test react violently(faster, darker color) to different pills? The slower turning pills i've tried didn't seem any better/worse than the fast ones. It might be coincidence, but the faster pills generally seem to be a bit softer-pressed than the others.

There you go... you just said it..
Thickening agents that make the pill harder also prevent it from reacting with the reagent as quickly as softer ones, but then again, it is not always the reason for a slow reaction

99% of the Playboys are DXM. I always heard about the typical DXM reaction, but several folks report no color change and then slowly to black. All the same folks ended up taking the pills and barfing their guts out...DXM. Don't take a chance with the Playboys. If it doesn't change immediately...leave it alone.
