I have been extremely near-death before when I went to India (passed out on a bus from taking Effexor + Tramadol together, heart kept on stopping, had to be on life support, was in coma for a couple of weeks, doctors said there was little chance I would wake up and if I did I would be a vegetable because I had been for long periods without breathing so they assumed the brain would be screwed) and had somewhat of a NDE. I didn't "see the light", but hallucinated that I was saying goodbye to good friends.
Ie: I experienced myself on the beach near my best friends holiday house and there was a storm on the horizon, he turned to me and said "you've got to go, it's OK though, don't be scared". At the time I completely knew this meant he was saying I had to leave this reality behind and "cross over" so to speak. While in the coma I actually came to the realization that I was dead.
There was heaps of other things which made it a very freaky experience.
How has it affected me? Well at first sometimes I was pissed off they managed to revive me and get my heart going again. But looking back on it now, all I can say is: I'm very thankful to still be alive and know just how lucky I am. Not many people have their heart stop in a third-world country and live to tell about it. It also makes you realize just how fragile and fleeting life is.
We're just here for a tutorial, as how is there any other way for an ethereal spirit to learn other than to be put into a corporeal world for a bit? Enjoy it, but don't blow, because it's all worthwhile.
Oh PS: I finished my degree that year and and am now studying chemistry, so didn't end up with brain damage as far as I know. Stupid Indian doctors.
