So I'm an often angry, depressed kind of guy but there's one thing in life that can reset me and that's getting outdoors and amongst nature. Watching honeyeaters flutter around noisily in heath, seeing a whipbird jump around the undergrowth whilst inhaling a lungful of earthy, moss scented rainforest air - these things are the soul's medicine.

We are extremely lucky to live in a country where no less than an hour or two from the centre of our biggest cities we can be in the centre of a National Park, experiencing something more ancient and sacred than any human endeavour comes close to.

So share your nature experiences here (be they animal or plant), your nature holiday photos. Voice your ecological concerns!

This is our country!

Starting things off on a depressing note (but what a great song):

And to further quote Midnight Oil:

"Out where the river broke, the bloodwood and the desert oak"

I'll share some of my own photos later (when less cripplingly hungover).

I'm gradually getting rid of the lawn on my nature strip.

This Macaranga is one of half a dozen seedlings that I saved from one of the drains in town. I am trying to plant Pioneer species because they tend to be smaller, I don't want anything that will eventually be too big.

I've got lots of things coming on for out there, I have been planning this for a while :)

Just got back from spending the weekend on North Stradbroke Island...

Plenty of cool bush walks through the majority national park and hidden gems like the spring fed Blue Lake...

I doubt you'll find any species world wide that have impressive seeds/seed heads. Serrata (or aemula)?

Now I'm even less enamoured of exotics :)

Never doubt nature to impress you, Lostpunk.

^ Yep, I got that email too. It's a Lotus pod, a cosmopolitan species. :)

There is an ad on TV about lawn and it has a guy in it passing himself off as some type of expert.

He picks up tennis balls and talks about them as if they are fruit etc. That ad annoys me, but Klues first post in this thread made me think of that.

Have any of you seen the inside of a Cactus, i'm going to call it the skeleton for lack of a better word

These trees are well over head height now, and looking really good. I am looking forward to some warmer weather and planting out ferns and cordylines I have ready.

Interested in Fire Ecology at the moment... there were a lot more fires in in vegetation before we started colonizing Australia. Friends of mine who are work in Enviromental management have to recommend strategic burns sometimes, even in urban areas...

Lately I've been involved with tree planting/revegetation projects... Paperbark trees, gumtrees, various native shrubs etc. Everyone should try it, it's quite a satisfying activity. Really looking forward to returning to the same areas in a few decades so I can see my little baby seedlings all grown up.

Has anyone seen those ads for FAKE lawn? Pretty depressing viewing experience, would not recommend.

What's it like as a cut flower lostpunk?

Last trade show I went to they are importing Roses from Columbia now, they last 6 weeks after 2 weeks in cold storage on their way over here. The Flower Exchange in The Netherlands is fascinating too :)

Cut flower? How the fuck would I know? This is the Natural Australia thread, not the 'How fucking sweet are birds in cages' thread.

I wish I had some photo's from when I lived in the midwest WA. Half of the flowers there havent been properly named or registered or whatever it is they have to do to make it official. Driving around in spring time was awesome.

Well here's one photo I have from the coast up there...
