People buying controlled drugs at pharmacies will be electronically tracked across the country in a world-first scheme being rolled out by the Federal Government.

The Department of Health and Ageing has called for tenders for a new electronic program to monitor drug use and to prevent drug abuse.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia national director Kos Sclavos said the new ''electronic recording and reporting of controlled drugs'' initiative would target drug users exploiting gaps in the system by ''doctor shopping'' and ''pharmacy shopping''.

It would introduce an electronic system used by all Australian pharmacies to record and report the purchase of controlled narcotic prescription drugs.

Mr Sclavos said the scheme would let pharmacists gain information about a patient's drug history as soon as they asked for a prescription drug.

The system will be available nationwide to prevent addicts and drug abusers from crossing state or territory borders to take advantage of different jurisdictions and legislation.

''It would be a first,'' Mr Sclavos said. ''No country has got this right. We have an opportunity because we have a federal health system.''

A national system to record and monitor controlled drugs has long been a priority for the pharmacy guild, which developed Project STOP, a pseudoephedrine register in 2005.

But Project STOP, which is the precursor to the new scheme, does not operate uniformly: it is a legal requirement for pharmacists to record the names and addresses of pseudoephedrine customers in some states and territories only.

Spokesman Shaun Singleton said the most important part of the pseudoephedrine register was its ability to make information available to pharmacists in real time.

For example, if someone tried to buy pseudoephedrine in two pharmacies on the same day, that information would be available to pharmacists.

It is this aspect the national database will harness. Currently, pharmacists update information on prescription narcotics sales in a controlled drug register, which is kept on the pharmacy's premises. Information on sales is sent to territory and state governments regularly, but is not available to other pharmacists.

Mr Sclavos said the new scheme would track the passage of controlled drugs from manufacture to supply and sale.

''We need to make them accessible to the patients but keep track of them. We would know, as we follow a drug through the supply chain, we would know where it is in the system.''

The Department of Health and Ageing will implement the new scheme from July1 next year.

It looks as though that this shit has been around in a while.

SO let me get this straight, Schedule 8 Drugs only? Surely they will be able to see your history on Schedule 4 drugs aswell when they put your details in the system am I right? What a waste of money which will also create alot less money going into the big pharmas and alot more going onto the streets.. Instead of providing injecting rooms in kings cross I think there main target should be Illegal drugs and spend all the money and recourses on those things because they are the real harm, who knows what they are mixing on the streets. Fair enough this scheme would be good for one wanting to commit suicide and go to 3 doctors then 3 pharmacies and then eat the whole lot, But what about those people wanting to enjoy it once in awhile like a person wanting to have a drink of Jack daniels once in awhile.

so what your saying is they are not ging to track doctor shopping for valium and xanax etc but oly oxycodone and stuff lool

That does not make sense to me, i think this new database will track all drugs that go on PBS. What if you have junkies wanting to go doctor and pharmacy shopping for valium, xanax, prozac etc.... your telling me this new database will not pick up on that.

well if it nly tracks s8 drugs like i said how can it NOT pick up valium, xanax shopping etc... soo not really answered cleary all was said is ONLY s8 drugs , but does that make sense to you or anyone so the database wont know if your going valium shopping? for example beacause the op said ONLY S8 drugs. i dont really see the point of this new database then becaue i can guarantee you there are more s4 shoppers then s8 shoppers as they are the most known drugs on the mARKET and in NSW xanax valium are S4 on the poiaons list

s8 only? Admittedly Ive been too lazy to read the article. But this wouldnt affect your standard panadeine or nuro plus packet though.

Honestly Im surprised they dont track S8 purchases/prescriptions anyway. Thats kinda crazy.

Well all of those codeine lovers are still safe then.
I'm not really sure what the heck is going on with this thread.

The question has been answered; it's a federal government initiative, so they are going to go by the federal schedules (the TGA's SUSMP) and the only benzodiazepine that is S8 is flunitrazepam (Rohypnol).

If you read through the thread and use your comprehension skills you will see that this has already been made clear a few times.

lol shitty joke. I wasnt able to comprehend a post telling someone to use their skills of comprehension.

ooooh the hilarious irony. Or not ;)

wel the thread is too big thats why im obviosly asking someone with knowledge to give it in normal language terms tga's susmps wtf??? and breifly so they only enter s8 drugs into your medicare against the database . is that correct mr smart one

^ Forget Medicare; they will enter the details of an S8 script with your name, address... they may even start to require some form of identification to verify details.

The SUSMP is the document that lists what drugs are which schedule in Australia. S8 drugs include things like dexamphetamine, morphine, oxycodone, pure codeine... so all these drugs will be on this new electronic database of prescriptions.

Drugs like diazepam, alprazolam, codeine with paracetamol are S4 drugs and won't be covered by this. They might be at a later date though as this seems to be the route that things are heading towards.

Apologies that I was short before, but yeah all this information is in the thread and explained in simple terms if you read through.
