Hi all,

I am experiencing severe back pain :X. I've just been signed off work for two weeks =D

So the doctor has given me naproxen and told me I can take paracetamol with them.

How good is this stuff for pain relief? I have a feeling its not going to do much for my pain.

Will it be as good as other opioid painkillers such as diamorphine or morphine? Im tempted to use either of these instead to control the pain (which is seriously very very bad).

Thanks

My understanding of naproxyn is that of a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID)

It has zero recreational potential and isn't really going to do anything for real chronic pain.

Now that being said taken before opiates, naproxyn is supposed to help potentiate them. Other than that there's no recreational potential. I know this is probably frustrating, best of luck to you.

It has zero recreational potential and isn't really going to do anything for real chronic pain.

Most NSAIDs are actually quite effective for treating inflammatory pain (chronic/acute). It may not have recreational potential but it definitely works better than placebo.

If you expect it to not work, that's not going to help you either.

I thought as much. The doctor knows I have a bit of a history with controlled substances so the dick head is probably not going to give me a prescription for anything this is slightly addictive. So now I have to be in severe pain as a result. He said its probably a sciatic nerve or something like that. I have to get an x-ray on it tomorrow.

So now I have to source some diamorphine or morphine for medical purposes. My previous source is no longer an option as the site got taken down. So im screwed. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I kinda thought that would be the case... gotta respect the rules of the site I guess.

So, I've managed to get hold of some subutex. How good will this work as a pain killer in comparison to naproxen? (which is doing NOTHING by the way).

Buy some kratom, that's what it's good for. It might not be enjoyable really, but it'll definitely help with pain, and its readily available. Get some red vein Bali and take about two teaspoons to a tablespoon.

If you just need it short term, get some UEI or Gold Reserve. There is also a full spectrum red extract that works great for pain, but it's very expensive, so definitely not a long term solution.

If you use the subutex then use the smallest dose you can.
Im not saying this just for HR sake but because buprenorphine works best for pain (higher doses are best for opiate replacement therapy) in doses of 200-400ug (micrograms), this is less then 0.5mg in laymans terms.
For your suspected type of pain (sciatica) though, naproxen should be very effective.

dont take naproxen on empty stomach. Some HR for you.

Also, depending you why you have back pain, naproxen can be better option as it can reduce the inflammation whereas opis mainly decrease feelings of pain

thanks for the useful advice... really appreciate that.

What is HR?

The naproxen is doing absolutely nothing. The pain is so freaking bad.

The subutex is on order now and will be with me shortly. I've taken a naproxen already and some codeine earlier today. I've also had a couple of glasses of wine and a couple of beers (yea stupid I know). I guess the advice would be to not take a 0.25 of a subutex pill tonight?

P.s. im off work so getting a bit high would be OK.

When my sciatica used to really bother me, honestly what worked best was about 800mg of ibuprofen. It worked even better than opiates for that particular pain.

HR = Harm Reduction.

Naproxen is nasty stuff.......it will upset your stomach if you don't eat first.

I was prescribed this my very 1st time to the doctor & after complaining, was switched to Tramadol.

For some people, Naproxen works wonders ut for me, didn't do much but make my stomach spin.

naproxen works great for pain, knowing it isnt recreational its my pain reliever of choice, i think its stronger than motrin 800, a naproxen 500

naproxen is an OTC NSAID. So... No, it's not gonna do much for your pain, and is certainly not comparable to the analgesia of opioids. It is my favorite OTC painkiller, however.

Adding naproxen or any NSAID (i prefer ibuprofen) to a opioid like codeine, hydrocodone, Demerol aka Pethidine or oxycodone is much better for inflammatory pain then say taking percocet or Vicodin as the paracetamol has no anti-inflammatory properties at all. You can still get percodan and aspirin with codeine and aspirin is a pretty good anti-inflammatory imo. For severe back pain caused by inflammation or any severe pain caused by inflammation adding a anti-inflammatory to a opiate is more or less standard treatment as both of them together work much better then either of them alone. One drug used here for severe back pain (but much more commonly scripted for tension headaches and basically any severe type of headache) is Fiorinal which is 330mg of aspirin, 50mg's of butalbital, 40mg's of caffiene and 15mg's of codeine. Those are the fioirinal-C 1/4C's the fiorinal-C 1/2 have 30mg's of codeine in them. The straight up Fiorinal doesn't have the codeine in them just the barbiturate. However due to the danger of barbs that is being prescribed much less these days.

I was given naproxen for a severe ear infection a while back, it was extremely painful 24/7. I couldn't take opiates, as I'm on bupe, and the naproxen was just excellent; complete pain relief. Don't write off an effective painkiller just because it's not an opioid.

Correct..if you do decide to take something stronger than the NSAID for it, make sure you also take the NSAID in addition. Opiates/opioids have no anti-inflammatory power and that is extremely helpful especially with acute back pain.
