I was watching CSPAN live when Brad Sherman made that announcement (the only tv I watch anymore). I'll never forget it. It's amazing that people still trust our government so unquestioningly after such an announcement. Of course, soon before that came out, the army times announced that the bloodiest combat brigade from Iraq would be deployed to the "homeland" (a term which the Nazis often used) and was trained in the use of non lethal weapons for civil unrest and crowd control under NORTHCOM. This is the army times official publication saying this! Kind of adds a little legitimacy to that threat, don't you think?

This is completely true and really adds fuel to the "conspiracy" fire.

And he's worth nothing compared to a lot of people out there who are half his age. A lot of people -- check the numbers for yourself, and you will be amazed.

I've thought a lot about how to answer this question over the past day or so: I can't go into specifics simply because I don't know - and neither does he. He just has a lot of money. Too much for the FDIC to insure and too much of a pain in the ass to bother with dealing with personally for him, because he did not go to Harvard and study financial derivatives and international finance. He moved from Sicily (not connected here or back home to any group of bad guys; if he was, he might have grown up with a water heater as a kid) and didn't graduate high school. All I know is that he keeps getting richer because small foreign countries full of hard-working lawyers and financiers educated in the finest schools here and in Europe or Singapore send him private jets and take him to their foreign lands and roll out the red carpet so that he may tour their financial institutions.

Keep in mind that that is a relatively middle-class millionaire. The tricks he may or may not use are not the best tricks in the book because those are reserved for more powerful/wealthy people, and he may have been looked at funny by a rogue agent here or there, but nothing has come of it and sure as the sun will rise tomorrow nothing ever will. My point is that there are a ton of people with his net worth more or less and a vast network of people around the world who will bust their asses just for a piece of however many of these types of guys they can gain the trust of.

So I believe you are wrong about government agencies being able to build real cases against people who surpass a certain level of wealth, regardless of technology, and once again keep in mind that this member of my family would have to take out a second mortgage to even talk to the people the next level up the food chain have access to. I should add that if you do draw attention to your money in the United States and you are involved in something unethical or illegal (same thing once it hits the headlines) that is primarily based in the United States then you are betting against the house, which is why I partially agree with you.

They keep talking about these kids being trained as Border Patrol, but this scenario has nothing to do with securing the border. It just happens to take place in a border town. Also, see the discussion about "college gunmen" and other situations that have nothing to do with securing the border. The constitution doesn't apply 100 miles in from the border, at least as far as searches go! Definitely some cruel and unusual punishment going on too...

Based on estimates I can only assume are relatively accurate, sourced from (6 I think) different locations and calculated using the ratio of thermitic material to non-thermitic material found in the dust samples, a handful of tons of it would have been present..

First of all, you misread her. She's speaking specifically about Siti Fadilah Supari. She makes no statements about anybody else. Second, the ridiculous idea that the Jews engineered diseases has been seriously floated around the muslim world-- of which Indonesia, and notably, Supari, is a part.

i see capitalism and nationalism are exempted.

The only other criticisms I will offer are the following:

1) Like it or not, corporate interests have been calling ANY demands by labor-- organized or not-- "class warfare" for over 100 years. This includes demands like a 40 hour work week, pensions, safe working conditions, child labor laws, and legal recourse in cases of wrongful termination.

2) "Race hatred" sounds to contemporary ears like majority white infringement of the civil rights of minority black citizens. However, at the time of the cartoon's creation, it could be applied more readily to reinforce de facto segregation-- MLK discusses this beautifully in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail Cell. It was his position-- and history bears him out on this-- that civil rights could not wait for a better time.

3) The ultimate goal of the American System seems to be maximization of GDP in the form of consumer purchasing power. This cartoon predates environmentalism but I'm confident it would couch it as primitivism or regressionism had it the foresight. Particular criticisms here are too numerous and obvious (to me, anyway) to mention. I do, however, have faith in the market system to correct these problems, as a market has been created for their correction.


Ultimately, this cartoon reinforces the status quo in the face of Soviet ascendancy (or, perceived ascendancy, anyway). Its essentially trickle down economics that urge people to look to the health of private enterprise to correct the problems of the day, rather than to address them through governance. This seems wrong-headed to me, as the private individual has no say in the affairs of a private enterprise, but an equal say in the affairs of the state.


A final comment-- It doesn't really matter what the prefix for the ism being sold is, though i could venture a guess. That's just a label for what is in actuality "legislation that restrains the conduct of some, for the benefit of all." That is the ambition and effect of all legislation that isn't budgetary. Its what makes this cartoon timeless, as it can be applied any time. Its also what makes it incorrect.
