(Mystery Compound) Supposed MDMA - near death experience, 28hr trip

Let me know if this is in the wrong place - a trip report and warning of suspected PMA crystals in Spain.

This was bought from a beer seller who a friend assured us was 'fine'.

Wrap acquired, the five of us inspected the crystals and after tasting decided it was MDMA - distinctive bitter taste and orangey crystals. We are all experienced with MDMA and know the come-up well. At this point we had no reason to suspect it was not MDMA. We split the gram between five, assuming ~200mg outside the club and no effects were felt when we got in 30mins later.

General excitement at being in a huge club and what I thought was standard pre-roll anxiety. We decide to dance.

1 hour in and none of us feel 'up' but we are all unable to stop moving. I feel sort of drugged, but assumed we were just taking a while to come up. N suddenly says she's up and has to go outside. I take her to smoke, she forgets the ability to speak English (she's fluent) and is extremely strung out, speaking German and looking confused.

1.30 and I am very uncomfortable. I feel wired and very hot. Dancing is not enjoyable and there is zero euphoria. I begin to realise something is wrong. We all move to a different room - much larger. Mistake.

1.45 Everything is stark and threatening, in monochrome. My vision is shaky. I see the hundreds of other people's eyes looking at me like predators, and hundreds of dead eyes staring at the floor shuffling. I'm terrified and I have to leave. I grab J, who understands and agrees to take me home. From here I don't remember (thankfully) but I'm told that in the next 2 hours I was confused, didn't know what country we were in, and was seeing and talking to things that weren't there. I got dangerously hot, sweaty and agitated, unable to respond to them. They were considering taking me to hospital, and probably should have.

The others come back on the next train having realised that F was badly hallucinating. During the train ride F thinks she is inside a giant worm. She is having trouble breathing. and is too hot. N feels insects crawling on her body.

3am We are back. I have forgotten how to eat. The next thing I remember is waking up in my bed with F. She is terrified and can see men in the room with sharp faces. She sees our skin melt off and leave bone, eyes and teeth in my hair and us morphing into rabbits. When she suggests things, I see them, such as a man sitting on our bed. We both hear voices, and she hears music playing when there is none.
I realise it isn't real and spend the rest of the frightening night comforting her.

Next day -

8am, 9 hours later and we have to check out. We have had no sleep and are still hallucinating, though it is not as terrifying in the daytime. We are still hot/cold and agitated and look strung out, pupils still huge.

The entire day we get waves of hallucinations, confusion and hyperthermia. F saw a ball thrown turn into a bird, I see flickers and shadows morph and when leaning on a wall feel it move behind me causing me to fall backwards. We are exhausted, wanting to rest but still stimulated, agitated and sweaty. We eat and I fall asleep, suddenly freezing cold.

9pm, 13 hours later and in the airport I'm near passing out from exhaustion. I am still seeing J's face morph into mine. On the plane as it takes off the world turns into shapes. I fall asleep.

12 noon, 28 hours later I wake up the next day in my country at home. I'm exhausted and spacey, depressed and anxious. I'm still seeing patches on the wall turn into shapes of faces. F has class and is still hearing music that isn't there - looking very odd when she asked someone to turn it off.

It's now 11pm and I feel spacey and generally slow. No more hallucinations.

From what I've read on erowid, this sounds like a PMA trip - the lack of euphoria, and actual dysphoria present being an indicator. Any thoughts would be welcomed - there isn't much subjective information about PMA available and I would say there is no recreational value.

This was an absolutely horrible experience and has really scared me and my friends off drugs. I can't begin to explain the amount of fear I felt, and now the worry that I've damaged my brain long term. If anyone has any good information about the long term effects I would be grateful.

I highly doubt any of y'all will incur long term brain damage from this as long as the next week or two y'all stay well rested, maintain good nutrition, and generally act in as healthy of a way as possible.

Good news: PMA has a way shorter duration than 28 hours. Whatever you took was likely not PMA. I'm not sure what caused you to think that this was PMA?

Did you send a sample to a lab already to find out what it is?

Thanks for the reply. I thought it may be PMA/PMMA as the effects were very similar to the experiences on Erowid, and I've read that active metabolites of PMA can stay circulating for many more hours, especially with a high dose. Do you have any ideas as to what it could have been?

No we didn't, though would have if we could have taken it on the plane.

Thanks psy997, I hope the guilt and sadness I'm feeling now wears off soon!

While this thread might be seen by the mods as substance ID, I don't think it should be closed. Maybe just change its name
This reminded of a brazilian guy who died in Mexico this month. He and his brother supposedly took "ecstasy" in an electronic music festival and hallucinated for 2 days straight, with really bad paranoia, thinking the mexican cartels were after them. This went on until one of them, while trying to "escape", fell from the roof of a 3 story building and died. Before that, he sent a voice message to his friends telling he was about to be kidnapped. Here is the link to the news, In case someone is curious:

I was waiting to see what the toxicology exams would reveal, but apparently the family dismissed them. They just know "the drugs" killed their son, so for drug ignorant people it doesn't really matter which one....

AAAAAND just now (looking for links of this event to post here), I found news about a couple of americans which attended to the same festival and lived a horror story pretty similar to the one lived by the brazilian brothers:

8o WTF MAN?! It pretty much resembles the symptoms you described....

I know drug ID is worthless, but this should serve as a warning for you people, if you still take "molly" without testing it beforehand.

Fucking terrible how people can pass of this as MDMA. Apparently the price of a pill is worth putting people's lives at risk. I strongly disagree with the drug war but people that knowingly pass off PMA/PMMA as Ecstasy or Molly should be shot. Testing is essential, too bad most people are completely unaware. PMA will continue to destroy MDMA's reputation, sigh.

For all you know, it was MDMA. At the same time this is a good lesson why you are supposed to test the purity of drugs every time you get a new batch. I guess you also now know that just because a compound is bitter and looks like MDMA doesn't mean it is, nor is it always prudent to just take 200mg of a mystery compound and expect everything to be fine. Reagent tests save people from shit like this.

Guessing at drugs based upon their appearance and effects alone is next to useless. There are half a dozen things that could have been substituted in there and without doing due diligence (testing them!!) you can't say for sure.

I guess I can move this to Trip Reports but... it can't stay here as a speculation thread.

I now clearly see how stupid taking it was. Been forced to do some serious thinking in the last couple of days and something has to change - I think I've developed a drug problem in the last couple of months without realising.

Please move the thread to wherever you see fit - I didn't mean for it to be a substance ID thread, just a warning and trip report. Thanks for the reply.

Those stories you linked are pretty shocking, I dread to think that that could have happened to us.
I wish we had even thought to test it with reagents, for some reason it didn't even cross my mind. I could come up with a myriad of excuses here but really I was just stupid, excited and wanted to take drugs.

I'm getting nightmares now and it would have at the very least helped to rest my mind if I had tested the damn stuff!

Wow, not judging, but:
1. you were in a foreign country and your flight home was the following day
2. you took a fairly heroic dose of an untested/untried substance
3. you purchased the substance from a "beer" seller. (could he, perhaps, want you to drink beer next time?)
you got some balls, that's for sure.

Strangely, I could relate so well to what you went through. Although yours is orders of magnitude worse. Anyway glad you pulled through - I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about it, instead use it as a valuable lesson and move on.

As an addendum to the tale, i'd love to know the outcomes/stories of the other participants. :)
