My Opiate Recovery Experience - Reduction of WD & PAWS

Just wanted to post this for those looking with help to quit opiates. I've done this mostly on my own and though I have had great success with it thus far (only 20 days) I can't speak for how it might work for you specifically. Some of the stuff is a little hard to get, but not impossible..................

I have a 4 yr habit, starting low, gradually working my way up to roxi/H use insufflated at higher doses than I care to admit........

About a month before quitting I was able to reduce my dosages w the help of low dose naltrexone. I would consume 4.5 mg over a 3 day period along with use and repeat this for about a month. This made initial withdrawal much much milder for me than otherwise would have been. Supposedly, it helps to keep the receptors not so excited in the presence of no opiates. Also use .5mg of sub first day or 2 to get thru. I hate that drug though, its nasty and I dont recommend it unless you absolutely need it.

Ok, that was good for acute wd, but what kills me has always been PAWS......No energy, cravings, cognitive retardance & depression. So I have been reading alot about what I think causes this and I believe it has to do with low levels of dopamine in the brain (D2 area specifically).......I attacked this by getting on Wellbutrin (a dopamine reuptake inhibitor) and a small dose, <1mg, of Bromocriptine (a D2 receptor agonist). I was really suprised at the results. Normally I would have zero energy and be worthless after the acute wd's subsided, but with this I feel like I'm 95% better.......

Just wanted to share my experience with this as I feel the more tools you have in your arsenal the better chance you have of overcoming this sickness. As always, someone to talk to about it is very important as well, but NA isnt quite for me......Good luck to all no matter which path u choose.

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear of your success. I've often thought about using low dose naltrexone as a sort of tapering aid.

As far as the wellbutrin, how long do you plan to stay on this for? Do you experience any side effects? I'm not sure if you explained it or not, but how long have you been off your DOC for?

Best of luck in the future to you!!

Plan to stay with Wellbutrin for 90 days, hoping no wd symptoms from it. I've been clean for 20 days now. The only side effect I have had has been from the Bromocriptine, which is a Prolactin inhibitor, is constantly wanting to have sex. This can be glass half full/empty depending on how u look at it.

Very much depends if you've got anyone to be having all this sex you're constantly wanting with really, doesn't it? Not sure that's entirely a side-effect of the drug. My sex-drive went through the roof after quitting following years of opiate suppression, read similar from others here. If you've got a drug effect adding to that quite natural rebound, why, you must be hornier than a dog with two dicks! ;)

Welcome to Bluelight BTW, and congrats on the detoxing, 20 days is some achievement. :) Interesting info. I've never even heard of Bromocriptine, let lone for withdrawal / recovery. Not what it would usually be prescribed for reading up on it. Was this under medical supervision? A doc prescribed it for this purpose, or you come across it elsewhere?

I do think the Bromo is making me even hornier than usual rebound affect......its a bit annoying, but i'll survive.

Thanks for the welcome. 20 days is huge for me......The best part is, right now, I have no desire to go back.

Doctors look at me cross eyed when I talk to them about this stuff. All I've ever been offered is subs and Tramadol (Gee thanks doc, but how bout u try them, let me know how that works out for u).

There are many dopamine agonists out there, bromo and cabergoline focus mainly on the D2 receptor area. Bromo is about 1/4 the price of cabergoline. Taking a small dose because there are side effects and receptor sensitivity issues. Don't plan on staying on it for a long time, but it is something I used once awhile back for dieting purposes.

I don't advocate anyone just running out there and doing exactly what I did without doing some studying up first, because used incorrectly these things (esp the low dose naltrexone) are bad news. I would like to put it out here though as a somewhat different method of coming off. I haven't been this happy in years.

It's nice to hear you feel so well 20 days out. I've never felt good even 40+ days out before. I always get severe depression.
