My First Grow Attempt

I'm growing seven plants right now. I used the wet paper towel method at first, and all of them cracked with tiny little roots. I then buried them in soil and made my first mistake. I forgot to water the soil first. I think the watering after they were planted might have shook them up a bit. I've got seven pots.

They're growing in my room right now. There's no way for me to get a grow light, unfortunately, where I am. I live in the far north.

However, there is a good side to that... Pretty soon, we'll be getting sunlight almost all day. Roughly 24/7. I've got a humidifyer and my room is pretty damn warm most of the time anyway.

I haven't applied any fertilizer yet, I'm waiting till they get a bit older and stronger. It's been one day since I planted them, still no sprouts. Should I worry if it takes longer than a week? When should I give up on them and start again?

How big are they likely to get, eventually? When can they be harvested first? I don't mind not growing them to full potential (likely, I won't be able to), as long as I can get them to grow enough for a harvest.

What's the chance of males? And are males still usable if you try to extract THC?

It shouldn't take much longer than 1-4 days before they pop the soil. Depends on how deep you've buried them.

Male/female ratio is pretty much 50/50.

With the paper towel method you need to be careful with the root as its extremely delicate! Hopefully you planted the seed with it pointing down(if you didn't it shouldn't matter too much)!

It'll probably take afew days for the sprouts to appear, and they probably won't all appear at the same time, stronger plants may be first but the stragglers can also yeild a decent result! If a plant hasn't sprouted after a week or so I'd say its probably not going to. However you said they had all cracked on the paper towel so as long as the root wasn't damaged you should have a high success rate.

You might have some problems trying to flower them in 24hours of light. They should grow fine however but usually they don't flower til they get a regular dark period of ~12hours/day. There are exceptions to this though, like if you're growing lowrider (usually doesn't grow much larger than 30-45cm). This plant will flower on its own when its ready even in 24 hours of light!

They could well get afew metres tall, especially if you're not able to control when they flower(like you could if you were using grow lights). You could probably try tieing them down to control height, but 7 plants will take up alot of room!

Good luck :)

If you already planted them and your in the far north, then chances are they will start to flower once they sprout then when it gets closer to summer and the sun is out for longer they will re-veg. Your best bet is to make a box and put some cfl's in it. Go to icmag.com, they will teach you everything.

When I want to give them a dark period, I'll place some tinfoil over the window so that no light can get it.

Thanks for the help so far, guys!

No sprouts yet, but I'm still hopeful...

I would go 18/6 light schedule for the first 2 weeks of above soil growth, then at 2 weeks give them their first real nute dose and toss em under 24 hour till you are done veggin.

thats gonna be a bitch giving dark period manually....

I'm going to predict troubles ahead without any manual light control. Also, I hope you're growing them somewhere where they're receiving direct sunlight. They need a LOT of light to yield well at all. This window you're giving them light through... does the light shine directly through it all day long? If it's not shining directly through, it's not going to be nearly enough light.

Also, definitely get males out of there as soon as you know for sure they are (right after they start flowering usually). But, cut them up and dry out the pieces, and make cannabutter or hash oil or something, so they don't go waste. Males do contain some cannabinoids including THC.

The root point makes a curl first. But yeah, it doesn't matter very much. I always just throw em in and don't pay much attention to how they are positioned. If the seed is good it will find a way to the surface anyways, if not, you haven't lost much.

That's a horrible suggestion. For one, he's not growing artificially, second, alternating between light cycles only causes stress.

I didnt realize he wasnt growing artificially when I posted, and I can only speak from expirience, while switching between light cycles does cause stress, it has always done wonders on my grows... :/ sorry

Why on earth would you alternate between light cycles during veg? Why not simply give them one? I don't see how it's going to be an advantage.

because, i would start them at 18/6 as to not burn my babies, let them stretch a bit, then switch them when I give them a first big dose of nutes. Its no more stressful than fimming or trimming or topping your plants.

And I dont claim to be the end all be all of knowledge in growing plants, I have grown indoor under 20 times myself. My knowledge is limited, maybe I am a moron...whatever

For a large part of the day, there is direct sunlight on the plants, yes.

Thanks again for the info!

Ah that's such nonsense. The more light they get at the beginning, the better. If they get burned, there's something wrong in your set-up. Either temperatures being too high or a low humidity.

what do you want me to say man, i am telling you how i do it, maybe my shit is fucked up, but yes, the temps are too high, for a young plant in a cab... what would you do?

Anyways, in all my expirience on overgrow, I never ran into anyone with as much knowledge as you seem to have. That includes bluelougrew and all the legends, so keep it up blowmonkey :D

namaste!
