My back hurts. what will the doctor say?

I had acupuncture once and it made me pass out and start convulsing on the floor.
Fucking witchcraft and sorcery :X

Oh and yeah it did nothing for my neck pain, obviously. If anything it made it significantly worse because I was so traumatised!

Wow, that's fucking scary :/ What did the acupuncturist say? Any idea what triggered it?

No idea mate. Once I came to and was able to walk I just got the fuck out of there. I was actually more embarrassed than anything.
She's registered and trained and stuff, my boyfriend and his mum have both been to see her. It's obviously just something that doesn't agree with me :\

^ where were you getting it done, on your neck?

she's probly hit a nerve or something and that close too the brain it's just sent you into shock.
(i actually have no idea:o so don't take that seriously)

fucking asian voodoo shit aye8o

I did acupuncture with my psychiatrist a couple times for acute anxiety attacks. Seemed to really help, very temporary though like maybe 24 hours max. Could have been placebo I guess but it really did seem to work and I really didn't believe it would.

^ try lifting weights and running.

fucking acupuncture for anxiety:p whoever came up with that must be rolling in the money.

If you believe the signs outside acupuncture clinics, it can cure everything from the common cold to severe depression and HIV :|

Well, I don't know anything about it really and didn't pay anything extra for it, but whatever. Seems to have as much literature as most other 'medical uses' for acupuncture (edit: sorry I was referring to using it for anxiety). "Acupuncture clinics" do sound kinda shady on first mention though. I don't see anyone saying "HAY ACUPUNCTURE WILL CURE YOU!!" in this thread so what's the big deal in mentioning it...

Anyway, seeing the doctor is a good idea.

get a deep tissue massage.. if you from melbourne there is a place called Karma which is really good.. and hey if it does not fix the problem you would have at least enjoyed 3 hours of bliss !!

If your back condition is a result of your work, you might want to consider workers' compensation. It's not always an easy road, but if you really can't afford treatment it's certainly something you should look at.

You really don't want to fuck around with your back. I deal with people with chronic injuries in my job and seeing the way an injury can impact your life is pretty terrible.

The long term affects of medication, whether it be pain killers or anti-inflammatories are not ideal.

I would definitely recommend seeing a doctor and trying to get a diagnosis.

Physio etc may be of some use during acute stages of injury. In the longer term, the best results I see with back injuries come from people who are consistent in exercising, particularly strengthening the core muscles to protect the back. Something like Pilates is ideal for this.

What i'm saying is the benefits of acupuncture... for anxiety atleast are far easier to get from excercise... especially muscle building excercises.

its basically the same fucking bodily reaction just on a much larger scale.

and i concur with wombus erectus, deep tissue massage ftw.
especially in a good place where they really know how too put your mind at ease so that your body is at ease also.

I have back pain that has gotten worse from working full-time and standing up all day, it's not quite lower back though it's more in the mid section and is probably related to something wrong with my spine that I was supposed to get fixed years ago.

Anyway yeah until I get this new X-Ray done my GP can't do much; I have some back exercises to do which help slightly and I take way more ibuprofen then I should. At the end of each week I use some codeine to help with it but that only masks it temporarily; I want to actually get it fixed and not have to take something everyday for it.

I do need to see a physiotherapist but I don't have much money at the moment. I can't have time off work either because I'm having trouble paying for rent and food as it is :(

It sounds like the injury is work-related so you should be able to get paid time off work and your medical bills covered by Work Cover

For anyone's interest: Acupuncture and pain relief

There are sources at the bottom also.

Nothing's going to be effective for everyone, and physio and analgesia probably work well for far more people than acupuncture does, but it's not voodoo/homeopathy ;)

I don't have time to read your link right now (will check it out later, I promise :| ), but I can't help but remember a few studies I read a while back which found acupuncture no more effective than a placebo, I'll try dig them up later.

^ Placebo is a powerful thing though; it costs pharmaceutical companies millions of dollars in trials that went to shit. I'll dig up an article maybe that talked about how the placebo effect is becoming a bigger occurrence then ever before and is leading to drugs not passing Phase II trials that would have in previous years.

To be perfectly honest, in Australia you are very unlikely to get prescribed any opiates for a problem such as this. Plus, opiates would only be masking the problem, not actually fixing it.

Your doctor will more likely prescribed naproxen (a NSAID) and/or advise you to seek physiotherapy. You may also have an actual injury, muscular or otherwise, in which case you will probably be advised to take time off work to rest.
x2

Exact case with my GP. Also Dencorub or Deep Heat comes to mind, never used it myself but others here might be able to tell you if it works. I was told to try it out by the pharmacist but never bothered.

^^ In my personal experience Dencorub and Deep Heat are good for warming up muscles before exercising, and for treating minor muscular pain, i.e. just general muscle fatigue after exercising. I personally haven't found much use for those types of products other than that.

For sharp muscular pain and for inflammation which is causing pinched-nerve kinda pain, Voltaren gel is definitely the way to go :)

If by placebo you mean sham acupuncture, then yeah they state that in the link I posted (and I said it on the previous page of this thread). Since a placebo needs to be indistinguishable to the patient from the real thing you can't really use anything other than sham acupuncture as a placebo comparison.

Ditto what Mr B said about the placebo effect.

If money's a problem, have you thought about seeing student physios/ chiros, etc? Usually they're not very busy because they can never enough people to practise on. By the time they're allowed to do things to the general public, they're almost qualified- they generally start out by practising on each other- lol! They're also usually free or very low cost.

These things are so easy to exacerbate too, especially with your job. I fell on my wrist in December, didn't break or fracture or anything and it still hurts. Now I can successfully open a door without too much pain, hooray. When I was on the naproxen for it, it was amazing what it did. It still hurts though, I guess it's very slow process.
